Modern-day liberals – or “progressives” as they more discreetly prefer – labor under an awkward misconception; namely, that there is anything remotely “progressive” about the fundamental canons of their blind, secular-humanist faith. In fact, today’s liberalism is largely a sanitized retread of an antiquated mythology – one that significantly predates the only truly progressive movement: biblical Christianity.

While visiting the Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg, Va., a few weeks back, I heard a troubling, albeit thought-provoking, sermon. Pastor John Mabray addressed the ancient Canaanite practice of Baal worship and, though he didn’t reveal it by name, connected the dots to its present-day progeny: liberalism. Baal, the half-bull, half-man god of fertility, was the focal point of pagan idolatry in Semitic Israel until God revealed His monotheistic nature to Judaism’s forebears.

In his sermon, Pastor Mabray illustrated that, although they’ve now assumed a more contemporary flair, the fundamentals of Baal worship remain alive and well today. The principal pillars of Baalism were child sacrifice, sexual immorality (both heterosexual and homosexual) and pantheism (reverence of creation over the Creator).

Ritualistic Baal worship, in sum, looked a little like this: Adults would gather around the altar of Baal. Infants would then be burned alive as a sacrificial offering to the deity. Amid horrific screams and the stench of charred human flesh, congregants – men and women alike – would engage in bisexual orgies. The ritual of convenience was intended to produce economic prosperity by prompting Baal to bring rain for the fertility of “mother earth.”

The natural consequences of such behavior – pregnancy and childbirth – and the associated financial burdens of “unplanned parenthood” were easily offset. One could either choose to engage in homosexual conduct or – with child sacrifice available on demand – could simply take part in another fertility ceremony to “terminate” the unwanted child.

Modern liberalism deviates little from its ancient predecessor. While its macabre rituals have been sanitized with flowery and euphemistic terms of art, its core tenets and practices remain eerily similar. The worship of “fertility” has been replaced with worship of “reproductive freedom” or “choice.” Child sacrifice via burnt offering has been updated, ever so slightly, to become child sacrifice by way of abortion. The ritualistic promotion, practice and celebration of both heterosexual and homosexual immorality and promiscuity have been carefully whitewashed – yet wholeheartedly embraced – by the cults of radical feminism, militant “gay rights” and “comprehensive sex education.” And, the pantheistic worship of “mother earth” has been substituted – in name only – for radical environmentalism.

But it’s not just self-styled “progressives” or secular humanists who have adopted the fundamental pillars of Baalism. In these postmodern times, we’ve also been graced, regrettably, by the advent of counter-biblical “emergent Christianity” or “quasi-Christianity,” as I prefer to call it.

This is merely liberalism all dolled up and gratuitously stamped “Christian.” It’s a way for left-wing ideologues to have their “religion” cake and eat it too. Under the guise of “social justice,” its adherents often support – or at least rationalize – the same pro-homosexual, pro-abortion and radical environmental policies pushed by the modern-day Baal worshiper.

Though the “Christian left” represent what is arguably a negligible minority within larger Christianity, the liberal media have, nonetheless, embraced their cause and seized upon their popularity among elites as evidence that the so-called “Christian right” (read: biblical Christianity) is losing influence – that Christianity is, somehow, “catching up with the times.”

Because emergent Christianity fails the authenticity test whenever subjected to even the most perfunctory biblical scrutiny, I suspect it will eventually go – for the most part – the way of the pet rock or the Macarena. But this does not absolve leaders within the evangelical community from a duty to call leaders of this counter-biblical revolution on their heresy. It’s not a matter of right versus left; it’s a matter of right versus wrong – of biblical versus non-biblical.

Nonetheless, the aforementioned pillars of postmodern Baalism – abortion, sexual relativism and radical environmentalism – will almost certainly make rapid headway over the next four to eight years, with or without help from the Christian left. The gods of liberalism have a new high priest in Barack Obama, and enjoy many devout followers in the Democratic-controlled Congress, liberal media and halls of academia.

Both Obama’s social agenda and that of the 111th Congress are rife with unfettered pro-abortion, freedom-chilling, pro-homosexual and power-grabbing environmentalist objectives. The same kind of “hope, action and change,” I suppose, that was swallowed up by the Baalist Canaanites of old.

So, today’s liberalism is really just a very old book with a shiny new cover. A philosophy rooted in ancient pagan traditions, of which there is naught to be proud.

There’s “nothing new under the sun,” indeed.

  1. This is why I am not a Democrat. The Democratic Party has taken up human sacrifice as a universal right and is propagating that sin with the sin of homosexuality on our culture. Liberalism is a false religion and is modern Baal worship in contemporary clothing.

    This does not mean that the Republican Party epitomizes Christianity. The only real virtue of the Republican Party is that they are at least, for now, willing to listen to biblical Chrisitans. They are the last political barrier to Liberals/Baal worshipers putting Christians in “re-education” camps. On an aside note, this is why I find Rick Warren and other accommodationsists so dangerous. Warren actually says these two views, the Liberal and Conservative, are both right in terms of faith. No they stand in total antithesis to one another.

  7. Yep, we are a culture of Baal-worshipers and sometimes I wonder where people get the idea the we are a Christian nation? There’s nothing Christian about our nation…just paganism. There are a few true believers in this paganistic society but even a lot of those who call themselves Christians are not really that because they follow the culture just as close as those who don’t claim to be Christians, i.e. atheists, agnostics, etc. I don’t see it changing because the world will act like the world!

  8. So what are we to do? all of our holidays are in actuallity pagan. We as a nation have all been duped into baal worship thru modern day practices as christmas, easter, just to name a few. How do we explain the truth to our children and open the eyes to those who walk around in ignorance. If we choose to truly walk in the light of the truth we will be persecuted by the culture of the world in what it has become. Often times by our own hypocrisy’s! When did our lord Jesus Christ say we were supposed to celebrate his birthday? I believe we were supposed to celebrate his resurection. Yet the dates we celebrate either are rooted to paganism from the earliest of times.
    Now we can be truly thankful more than ever for the ultimate sacrifice given for all of our souls by our Lord Jesus Christ. Only through his grace and forgiveness does any of us have a chance to be able to live a life that is right in Gods eyes. May the love of our Lord Jesus Christ open our eyes to light of his truth!

As a believer in God and His promises as stated in the Bible, this has been my view of the political landscape in America all along, and especially now that it has become even more obvious in our current chaos. Balancing what is happening today with what God gave us as what is coming (The Book of Revelation prophecy) makes it easy to identify the evil at work in the world … and how it plays into His plan. That’s not to say the end is here, but that it IS coming but we know not when.

    I appreciate that this author does not target Democrats as the purveyors of this growing evil, but instead identifies those who support the illness America is experiencing as ‘the modern-day liberals’ (left) or “Progressives” – wherein lies the disconnect when many traditional Democrats mistakenly believe anti-Obama sentiment is just the same old ‘R Vs D’ politics-as-usual scenario. It is so NOT!

    Unfortunately, there are still far too many American’s who think they can TRUST the letter game when it comes time to choose who to vote for. Voting for a “D” (or “R”) does not mean that candidate will hold to the traditional values of the party it represents no matter what WORDS they used to dazzle the voting public. ‘HOPE’ and ‘CHANGE’, for instance, were used for their ability to invoke one meaning but have proven to be quite another.

    America is transforming into the chaotic party of evil going on below while Moses was up on the mountain receiving the Ten Commandments as depicted in the movie with the late Charlton Heston. The ‘Progressives’ are throwing the illicit party so American’s won’t notice their agenda to enter in, by an incremental evolutionary process, the new world order which doesn’t allow the United States to remain a free country with citizens who can continue to enjoy their LIBERTY as guaranteed by our Constitution.

    WE, the People, are the heartbeat of America. “Live free or die” was the creedo of those who set the stage for America to thrive and grow into THE bastion of freedom for the world. Their truth is our truth now. If we don’t hold to and protect the self-evident truths; Life, Liberty, and the FREEDOM to pursue happiness, our heartbeat will be enslaved by those who seek to control every aspect of our lives in America … which is the liberal Progressives dream come true, but was the nightmare our Forefathers knew all too well having lived under the heavy hand of the King of England.

  10. I agree that the left/right, Democrat/Republican paradigm is no longer valid. The Republicans are just as corrupt, pro homosexual, and anti-Christian as the Democrats. We have been betrayed on so many levels it would take a book to try and outline the corruption including Israel first Zionism that has taken over many churches and seminaries.

    Just look at who are members of the homosexual, Molech worshiping Bohemian Club who meet annually in the Bohemian Grove north of San Francisco. This included Bushs, Ronald Reagan, and a former leader was Walter Cronkite, “the most trustest man in America”.

    The propaganda everyone faces is amazing and it is time to wake up and band together as true Christians for whatever is coming. If you still believe that a Judeo/Christian country is not like Night/Day then read “Discovering Judaism” by Hoffman and find out about the Baylonian Talmud, and it will provide undertstanding of why letting duel citizen Zionists infiltrate and run this country was the same as letting organized criminals run American into the ground.     Believe it or not, the CIA has people at every significant level of federal, state, and local governments, as well as, major media. “Commissioners” are likely positions and the pentagon helped set this up under the cover of a Defense Department program. We truly have become a nation of idiot serfs fighting illegal wars for an ungodly political state of Israel, and to prop up the dollar as the only oil trading currency.

    You can see history repeating itself with parallels to the Roman Empire and 1930’s Germany now with a much greater gap between armed citizen/serfs and the military, and much more ruthless tax based banking system.

    Other than the return of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, our only hope seems to be a military coup as explained in the books by Col. Donn de Grand-Pre . Please pray for people along the Mexican border where US & Mexican military has started to fly helicopters across to attack one group of drug trafficers over another.

  11. I realize this is an old post but I am going to comment nonetheless. I just read through Jeremiah 7 and found in verse 18 the “Queen of Heaven”. I remembered hearing recently that Semiramis, the mother/wife of Nimrod, was known as the “Queen of Heaven” along with The Virgin Mary from the perspective of the Catholics. I have limited knowledge of the issue but apparently Nimrod was revered as a god as was his son, Tammuz, that Nimrod fathered through Semiramis. I have recently heard this tied in with Baal worship and even our modern government. I thought, along with you, that there is “nothing new under the sun” and that surely Baal worship was present today but perhaps continuing along in another name.   12. The real worshipers of Baal (self) are the co-called “conservatives” of today who are so materialistic and who serve materialism…

    The above rationalization is what one would expect from a “believer in the false christ”…not the True and Living Christ who implored us to be “good stewards”, to love and do mercy and justice, to walk humbly, to feed the hungry, minister to the sick, clothe the naked, house the homeless, visit the prisoner and WHO did not say the state couldn’t participate in those purposes. He was opposed to material greed, avarice and selfishness (self love–Baal) which the so-called “conservatives” are so deeply committed to; they who support the polluters who profit significantly from the destruction of God’s creation and the poisoning of his children, his flora and fauna for want of the almighty wealth and power of the dollar.

    I think the author of this essay is either innocently mistaken or else a purposeful pawn of the false “christ” who is the enemy of God and the True and Living Christ. His statement is a political statement and/or an instruction rather than a statement of faith!!! I have always found it ironic that the political and religionist “conservatives” seem to come down on the side of the greedy plutocrats, oligarchs and corporatists; in other words God favors the rich over the struggling poor and starving children-something from the old “gospel of wealth” which seems to deny virtually everything Jesus said in all of the versions and interpretations of the New Testament.

    I am no supporter of abortion as a means of birth control…But I am actually “pro-life after birth” when it seems that so many who prance around self-righteously and sanctimoniously touting their so-called “pro-lifeism” are actually only “Pro-birthers” who are determined to pull the fetus out of the frying pan (womb) and throw the helpless infant into the fire (life) regardless of the parent’s mental or physical ability to care for it–feed, house, clothe, nurture, educate it. It is as if the “pro-birthers” or through with the fetus and forget the fetus once it becomes a helpless infant. From my perspective, those hypocrites think their obligation ends at birth. “Life” does not end at birth! It actually begins.

    Millions of unwanted infants are born each year but millions of them are not adopted by those hypocrites who demanded their birth. So many so-called “pro-lifers” refuse to adopt the imperfect infant, the minority baby, the AIDS baby, the drug addicted baby, the mentally or physically afflicted baby….and worse than that, those “pro-lifers” who insist they are “conservatives” fight every effort by the state to help those helpless infants have a fair start at life in this harsh and mean world. They impose their religionism on society via the law book so they can move on to other issues like putting the Ten Commandments in government buildings or praying at football games or purging actual history from school-books…

    My conclusion regarding the “pro-birthers” is that they don’t really care about the fetus or the infant; they only care that they are “impressing” God and mankind with their “symbolic gestures”….A NEWS-FLASH: GOD is not impressed with those “symbolic gestures” regarding birth anymore than he is “impressed” with where we put the Ten Commandments if we don’t intend to live up to them. Oh, and mankind is fickle!!

As abortion & sexual sin are abundant within many Progressive minds, so are the idolatry & self edification present at the heart of many so-called Conservatives.
    Christ willfully gave up the highest place to be the lowest servant of all who were lost.
    If one can empty ones self of all comfort & serve the dying world until the end, then there is no room for Baal. We also know there is not one among us who is innocent of selfishness. Simply we all need only to focus on the plank in our own eyes, love those who are lost, pray constantly, and keep short accounts daily, with the 1 true gatekeeper, Jesus Christ.

It makes me happy that your highlighting what is going on in todays society with an anti-christian agenda murking around. I am shocked that baal worship as disguised itself in politics, abortion and gay rights. There is now what appears to be an anti christian sentiment, it feels like a hitler society persecuting the jews, excecpt that its christianity.     There is no error in rightly caring for God’s creation. There has been sinful neglect of God’s creation, worse still, plundering and wasting it for selfish gain. Christians should be in the forefront of demonstrating right care and stewardship over God’s creation. But numerous mindsets have risen to the fore, which have replaced a true understanding of creation with false, such as:

    a) “Mother Earth” is our provider (not a Creator God), so we need to care for “her”.
    b) God is in His creation, therefore to care for it is to give worship, or minister, to God.
    c) All is god: the animal, the plant, the planet, and we are all part of god, so to harm one is to harm the whole (which, of course, is god).

    When such mindsets become the foundational basis for caring for the environment, the religious beliefs inherent therein (ie: Panentheism, Pantheism, Idolatry) inevitably become manifested by their adherents, resulting in an attack on the truth as revealed in God’s word.

They are two side of the same coin in a managed conflict. The philosophy is Hegelian-Thesis and anti-thesis. The synthesis is acceptable to both sides. It is the common person who is squashed in the middle and for them, the end justifies the means. There is no hope for respect of human life. One solution: Fear God and give glory to Him. Make your Christianity as Biblical as perfect in every aspect: John 8:32; John 17:17. The following popular beliefs are pagan relics: 25th of December birth of Jesus; Sun-day worship; image worship-the list continues. Christ has already confonted the Devil on the cross so don’t do that. By the way He is coming again soon.

  25. This is an article that truly opened my eyes. Although I for one voted for Obama, I did not support his view on abortion among other things. But out of the two candidates I thought he may be the most reliable. My only option was vote or not. To not vote was allowing others to choose for me. Is there anyway way we can stop or slow the dark progression this country is heading towards? While enlighting others? Jesus help us!!

Frankly, I picked up on the clear similarities between contemporary “Liberalism”–actually plain old paganistic socialism–and paganism a long time ago. “Choice”–keep in mind that Nazi concentration camp doctor only practiced “choice,” “…to the left…” or “…to the right..” is nothing more than child sacrifice, spun to give the worshippers the belief it is THEY who are morally superior!q

    I was born in one country, raised in another.

    My father was born in another country.

    I was not his only child. He fathered several children with numerous women.

    I became very close to my mother, as my father showed no interest in me.

    My mother died at an early age from cancer.

    Although my father deserted me and my mother raised me, I later wrote a book idolizing my father, not my mother.

    Later in life, questions arose over my real name.

    My birth records were sketchy. No one was able to produce a legitimate, reliable birth certificate.

    I grew up practicing one faith but converted to Christianity, as it was widely accepted in my new country, but I practiced non-traditional beliefs and didn’t follow Christianity, except in the public eye under scrutiny.

    I worked and lived among lower-class people as a young adult, disguising myself as someone who really cared about them.

    That was before I decided it was time to get serious about my life and embarked on a new career.

    I wrote a book about my struggles growing up. It was clear to those who read my memoirs that I had difficulties accepting that my father abandoned me as a child.

    I became active in local politics in my 30’s; then, with help behind the scenes, I literally burst onto the scene as a candidate for national office in my 40s.

    They said I had a golden tongue and could talk anyone into anything.

    I had a virtually non-existent resume, little work history, and no experience in leading a single organization.

    Yet I was a powerful speaker and citizens were drawn to me, as though I were a magnet and they were small roofing tacks.

    I drew incredibly large crowds during my public appearances. This bolstered my ego.

    That sounded good to all people.

    So, I started to make my speeches sound like they were on behalf of the downtrodden, poor, ignorant to include “persecuted minorities”.

    My true views were not widely known, and I kept them unknown, until after I became my nation’s leader.

    I had to carefully guard reality, as anybody could have easily found out what I really believed, if they had simply read my writings and examined those people associated with. I’m glad they didn’t.

It is painfully obvious to those with spiritual discernment that America and its citizenry have been brainwashed to believe that America was founded upon Christian principles & champions the Christian Faith when in reality, America is the Masonic empire with enough “Christianity” to keep the masses distracted, and worshiping a “nationalist” false christ, not the Word of God (Jn 1:1). At the time in history the NWO Freemasons formed the USA, monarchs were seen as more of a threat to their power than democracy. Does a government who governs upon the “foundation” of Christian principles involve itself in wars of aggression? Killing its currency? Stealing from its own citizenry only to transfer their wealth to foreign banks? “Create jobs” by shipping them to China and India? I think not. The United States of America is little more than the “host” for the infectious disease of the New World Order…Freemasonry and it’s phony political charade simply keeps the fever up.

  38. It is interesting to see comments stated by Christians that the Democrats are no different than the Republicans, but they are. The Democrat Party is radically pro-abortion and the only pro-life legislation that I have seen has been by majority Republican legislatures. As long as Christians believe that the sin of greed (who says Democrats aren’t greedy?) is equal in value to the sin of murder, there will not be a change in the American culture, let alone politics. Yes, I bow my knee to Jesus Christ and not to any political party, but I am also not blind to the clear moral differences between the parties, as was so evident at the Democrats’ 2012 pro-abortion and pro-homosexual convention.

    Other peoples sins are always worse then ours, aren’t they? That is what hireling evangelical pastors are leading their pews to believe to keep them feeling happy and holy. How else are we suppose to get “cheerful” givers?

More of the comments seem to agree w/ the article as I do.– Yes many of the Christian “traditions” are definately based on paganism–christianizin & gentilizing the throughly Jewish “Jesus” (real name Yeshua) and HIS gospel (which was for all nations). The church fathers did a grievious sin in rejection our Jewish Lord’s people. We are grafted into Israel, not Israel to us.
    It is written that the antichrist (including his representatives such as Constantine) will change the dates and times… He did just that when he claimed the day of worship of Sunday (when the pagans worshipped their sun god) to surplant the God ordained and appointed Sabbath & forbid any celebration of the days that God appointed that we should meet with HIM –His feasts. They also totally turned agains the Messiah’s own people (led straignt to the holocaust) Jesus (Yeshua) was, is & will return as a JEW. He will reign from Jerusalem. If you say you love and follow the Messiah (the Christ) and hate Israel or the Jews something is very wrong. If you love HIM you will follow HIM in His traditions.
    He would be neither Democrat or Republican…. He would follow the commandments He wrote (the Torah–book of instructions). There will be no abortion, no homosexuality, etc as it will be severely dealt with as the Torah requires (and Torah has always required ‘Mercy’) He will be the judge so that you know it will be rightuous. Even when He reigns from Jerusalem in the near future, the mortals living at that time will have a problem with HIM. But..

  44. Baal is called Santa Claus today. The image of Baal we a brass statue that wore a Fez hat. They built a fire inside it and placed their children on the lap of this horrible idol in the hope of prosperity, and give one another gifts. The children That were sacrificed in this way were products of another pagan ritual involving dyed eggs. we have a lot of pagan influences in our “holidays”, but when you consider how Constantine was a pagan at one time they changed the Sabbath and added their old practices. to fit their old way of thinking. I still like Christmas and Easter for what it represents to my faith, but what does an Easter egg have to do with the resurrection? What does a bearded man who most children are afraid of the first time they see him. have to do with with the birth of the Messiah? I’m sure someone could give a half way cleaver answer, but it still wouldnt be right.

  50. The world wont quit sacrificing babies until the church does. Before birth control the average family had 5 children, now less than 2. The church loves it!
    It doesn’t even matter to Christians (so called) that birth control pills are abortifacient.
    The Pastors don’t care either. They wont say a word against birth control. Just be popular so the money keeps coming in

  53. The problem and the confusion of all of you who criticize Christianity is that you at this time don’t understand that it is not the Christian who is so good, – but that God is! Jesus is the One Who transforms us! His System is the best on earth, it is truly the only PROGRESSIVE system this globe has had since the fall. We Christians, in fact, are still sinful and always need God and to return to Him – He is always on the Hill with open arms and LOVES to forgive us; but because of Jesus, a true Christian wants nothing more than to love God, himself, and his neighbor. We are very imperfect, I know that, but we try, and you do not seem to know enough about Christian ministry in this world, because if you did, you would understand that without the Christian system and the gazillions of Christian ministries which are going on right at this moment, it would be hell here on earth, a lot more than it is now in so many places. All hell will break loose when that day comes, and the worst (those who truly tried) Christian in your memory will seem to have been like an angel! Christianity – The ONLY GOOD NEWS (not I, a redeemed sinner), tries to tell the world how good God is, how Jesus SAVES for all eternity and how we should live for our divine purpose here in service to God and man. It is not about us, it is about loving God, which is the only true happiness we can find, ever, now and into all eternity. I pray for you to have an experience understanding the love of Jesus Christ for us! I pray for you to experience His unfathomable mercy like no Human can give us! It is the washing of our soul into a heart that beats for our brother or sister, that works on forgiving and loving every moment. But all the more, we who profess ourselves to be believers, ought to be getting our houses in order; starting with getting rid of man made traditions, idol worship, hyocrisy and the like; with leaning to our own understanding and the private interpretations of YHVH (Yehovah)’s word and prophesies. Much is being left out of our learning and getting right knowledge. Some are going by hand-me-down religion that’s been passed on from one generation to the next. On this day depends the length of time you will live in the land YHVH swore He would give to your ancestors Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov.” Verses 10-18 Read and Note: quoting verses 12-14 (reference verses Rom. 10:6-8). 11) For thismitzvah which I am giving you today is not too hard for you, it is not beyond your reach. 12) It isn’t in the sky, so that you need to ask, “Who will go up into sky for us, bring it to us and make us hear it, so that we can obey it?” Likewise, it isn’t beyond the sea, so that you need to ask, “Who will cross the sea for us, bring to to us and make us heart it, so that we can obey it?” On the contrary, the word [is very close to you]—[in your mouth, even in your heart]; therefore, you can do it.

    Knowing YHVH and all that He commands, teaches, and engligthens of Himself, should never be like pulling straws or hitting at the wind. Nothing about Him is comlicated or confusing. We have only to have a heart thirsty and mind hungry for Him and His truth. Never leaning to our own understanding or the opinions of others; not even preachers or pastors should we trust with our souls. Much of what is taught is contrary to His word. Some go as far as to say, “Torah is of no effect!” It’s all about grace and the Gospel. But I beg to differ. Everything, and I do mean everything is One with the Creator. His word is one. His laws, statutes, etc. are one with Him, because it all came from Him. So, what is that to mean? We take all of Him or nothing! You can’t have one without the other. Leaving anything out is like leaving a part of Him off! His Son, whom you profess and claim as your Savior and Salvation, kept to the very Letter. In fact Yochanan (John) 1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with YHVH, and the Word was YHVH. He was with YHVH in the beginning. [All] things came to be through HIm, and without Him nothing made had being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of mankind.” What in all of this don’t we understand or get? We need to stick to the Truth and stand for the Truth. Chapter 10:4, “After taking out all that are His own, He goes on ahead of them; and the sheep follow Him because they recognize His voice. 5) They [never] follow a stranger but will run away from him, because strangers’ voices are unfamiliar to them.”

    Thellim (Psalms) 14:1, Fools say in their heart, “There is no God.” They deal corruptly, their deeds are vile, not one does what is right.” Shalom!
