Sermon of the week: “Jesus Christ Teaches Limited Atonement” by James McClarty.

The battle continues to rage within the evangelical community – for whom did Christ die? Did He die for all who ever lived or did He die for the elect? Read the lyrics below and listen to the sermon from James McClarty and humbly see if what these men represent is true. Not, do you like it; not, does it line up with your thinking. Is it in line with the clear teaching and intent of God’s Word, for the glory of His name?

Mission Accomplished, Shai Linne:

Here’s a controversial subject that tends to divide
For years it’s had Christians lining up on both sides
By God’s grace, I’ll address this without pride
The question concerns those for whom Christ died
Was He trying to save everybody worldwide?
Was He trying to make the entire world His Bride?
Does man’s unbelief keep the Savior’s hands tied?
Biblically, each of these must be denied
It’s true, Jesus gave up His life for His Bride
But His Bride is the elect, to whom His death is applied
If on judgment day, you see that you can’t hide
And because of your sin, God’s wrath on you abides
And hell is the place you eternally reside
That means your wrath from God hasn’t been satisfied
But we believe His mission was accomplished when He died
But how the cross relates to those in hell?
Well, they be saying:

Lord knows He tried

Father, Son and Spirit: three and yet one
Working as a unit to get things done
Our salvation began in eternity past
God certainly has to bring all His purpose to pass
A triune, eternal bond no one could ever sever
When it comes to the church, peep how they work together
The Father foreknew first, the Son came to earth
To die- the Holy Spirit gives the new birth
The Father elects them, the Son pays their debt and protects them
The Spirit is the One who resurrects them
The Father chooses them, the Son gets bruised for them
The Spirit renews them and produces fruit in them
Everybody’s not elect, the Father decides
And it’s only the elect in whom the Spirit resides
The Father and the Spirit- completely unified
But when it comes to Christ and those in hell?
Well, they be saying:

Lord knows He tried

My third and final verse- here’s the situation
Just a couple more things for your consideration
If saving everybody was why Christ came in history
With so many in hell, we’d have to say He failed miserably
So many think He only came to make it possible
Let’s follow this solution to a conclusion that’s logical
What about those who were already in the grave?
The Old Testament wicked- condemned as depraved
Did He die for them? C’mon, behave
But worst of all, you’re saying the cross by itself doesn’t save
That we must do something to give the cross its power
That means, at the end of the day, the glory’s ours
That man-centered thinking is not recommended
The cross will save all for whom it was intended
Because for the elect, God’s wrath was satisfied
But still, when it comes to those in hell
Well, they be saying:

Lord knows He tried

  1. FOR WHO DID CHRIST DIE?
    John Owen
    ________________________________________
The Father imposed His wrath due unto, and the Son underwent punishment for, either:

    1. All the sins of all men.
    2. All the sins of some men, or
    3. Some of the sins of all men.

In which case it may be said:

    1. That if the last be true, all men have some sins to answer for, and so, none are saved.
    2. That if the second be true, then Christ, in their stead suffered for all the sins of all the elect in the whole world, and this is the truth.
    3. But if the first be the case, why are not all men free from the punishment due unto their sins?

    You answer, “Because of unbelief.”

I ask, Is this unbelief a sin, or is it not? If it be, then Christ suffered the punishment due unto it, or He did not. If He did, why must that hinder them more than their other sins for which He died? If He did not, He did not die for all their sins!”

  2. Chosen. Chosen, redeemed, adopted and empowered by Him for whatever reason He has.

To believe we ‘accept Jesus into our hearts’ is foolish and makes it look as though we are doing Him the favor.

    Chosen. Simple.

  3. On a previous thread I asked a commentor if I could explain what I mean when I say Jesus died for all men and Satan and his angels.

This sermon this morning gives me an opportunity to share what I mean and why I believe in limited atonement.

Jesus did die for all men and also for Satan and his angels.

Not all men were atoned for. Christ’s death establishes all men in their place before God for good or for ill.

Joh 15:16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

Jesus said something that apparently continues this limited atonement debate showing us it has been going on for a long time. We see clearly in the portions of the Old Testament where God rejected people and totally annihilated their existence from off the face of the earth bringing eternal damnation upon them as well. He also brought temporal judgment on others for their sins yet we know clearly they are in Heaven without a doubt. Moses would be one of these.

What did Jesus say that continues the debate today?

Looking at two places from the Gospel of John we read this:

Joh 15:22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.
Joh 15:23 Whoever hates me hates my Father also.
Joh 15:24 If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.
Joh 15:25 But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’
Joh 15:26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.
Joh 15:27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.

Joh 16:1 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away.

Joh 16:7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
Joh 16:8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
    Joh 16:9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;
    Joh 16:10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer;
Joh 16:11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

I would narrowly focus upon those three things there basis what Jesus said back in Chapter 15. Those three things are, sin, righteousness and judgment.

From the Elect’s point of view looking at these three things we can see the Apostle Paul looked into it too. Considering what he meant when we read this from Romans we can come to understand our purpose as God’s Elect in the world:

Rom 9:11 though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad–in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls–

Have you ever wondered what the purpose of election is?

Well it is this debate in some measure.

    Why?

Well, first, because if Jesus did not come, as He said there @ John 15:22 and speak to the world there would be no way for Him to find them guilty of sin. In other words, if there is no transgression established, proved in a court of Law that transgression has occurred, then there is no guilt and if there is no guilt established there is no sin and if there is no sin established there is no eternal judgment and if there is no eternal judgment then the god of this world would win the debate.

Jesus Christ has taken away all my excuses for my fallen nature and my sin and guilt.

There is none righteous, no not one! No one seeks after God in this world under the control of the god of the world.

From the federal head of humanity comes the full nature of sin on all mankind. One need not commit one sin to be judged a sinner.

This brings me to why I say that Christ died for all men and for Satan and his angels.

In the verses in John 16 Jesus says He has to go away so that the Holy Spirit can come and convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment.

Let me explain it this way.

I have been on a number of juries over my lifetime. In every case, the defendant pleaded “not guilty” to the charges brought against him and it was left up to the Prosecutors to prove his guilt while it was his defense counsel to prove his innocence. It was up to the jury to decide whose argument is correct. I propose to say that the Elect are both the offenders and jurors of the jury and what the Apostle Paul touched on in Romans establishes that. God has a purpose of election in this world.

The purpose of election is to establish guilt.

Who is doing that these days?

    The Elect are.

I read in the paper just the other day that a infamous murderer sitting on death row is appealing his case and still protests his innocence even though he was found guilty of murder beyond any reasonable doubt by the jury of his peers.

That’s what is happening there @ John 16:9. These people are the people arguing before God that they are good enough to live with Him forever and that they have a “right” to Paradise after they die. Why are they found guilty though? “Because they do not believe”.

Who believes they are guilty and worthy of both temporal and eternal punishment? The Elect.

The reason why is because the Elect were elected to believe the testimony about Christ. Jesus said that only the sick need a physician. That is why in John 16:10 we read that phrase “because I go to my Father”. Why could He do that? Because there was no sin found in Him after He died. Death could not hold Him and God could not punish Him because the Holy Spirit vindicated Him before the Father. The Holy Spirit could not vindicate Christ before the Father if there was found in Him one jot or tittle of transgression or sin!

Who is righteous then? God is. Is man righteous on his own or is he reckoned as righteous by the very same Faith Abram was reckoned as righteous before God even though we all can clearly point to some very immoral sinfulness in his life? The “righteous” shall live by His Faith, not his.

Finally, judgment has come and is coming. It comes upon those who do not believe dying in their sins. It will come to Satan and his angels, all of whom do believe and shudder as they continue leading the world in rebellion against Almighty God.

So, Jesus died for all men. His death, burial and resurrection is what is in view and necessary for the exposure of all excuses being made for sin or for one’s justification before God. That some are good enough because they do not believe the Gospel instead protest before the Elect that they are good enough to get into Heaven after they die without Christ’s atonement in full is fool hearty indeed. And as the jury finds one guilty so the Elect in the face of this sort of protest knows this protest will bring upon them predetermined eternal damnation because they will die in their sins reprobates and not as the Elect who are justified by Faith through Grace as a gift from God. For the Elect the purpose of election is to proclaim the Gospel so Faith can go forth to more and more of God’s Elect sitting in darkness and the shadow of death!

And Jesus’ death is what was necessary for God’s wrath and retribution to come fully and completely upon the Beast, the false prophet, Satan, Death, Hades and all those whose name is not found written in the Lamb’s book of Life written before the foundation of the world. First and foremost Christ had to die innocent so He could bring this eternal damnation upon them.

I cannot say I fully understand all this. This is just what I believe and I believe it is sound reasoning in the Faith to share it in here today.

There is something I want to add to this about the “Law of Righteousness” and how Satan used it and still uses it to condemn people today. And I want to point to how the Holy Spirit uses it to convict a person of their sins that leads to repentance and to the forgiveness of sins and the perseverance of the Saints.

Remember the story in the Bible about the strong man? In the Bible the strong man is Satan.

Here’s Luke’s account and from it I would make a distinction thereafter about the Law of Righteousness.

    Luk 11:21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe;
Luk 11:22 but when one stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his spoil.

In there we see the players. One, we see the strong man, Satan. Two, we see his goods are safe, the entire world and everything in it after Adam’s fall in the Garden. Three, we see one stronger than he attack him and overcome him, this is Jesus. Four, we see this stronger one take away his armor and divide his spoil.

I propose to you to think about that armor as the “Law of Righteousness” being used by Satan against mankind to keep them in bondage to their fallen nature. I propose to you to think about Jesus attacking Satan as the two accounts from Matthew 4 and Luke 4 give as the time and place where Satan was attacked and defeated and the authority he had to use (the Law of Righteousness against fallen mankind) was taken away from him.

Why do I make that proposal? Consider in both accounts what Matthew and Luke record happens after that exchange in the desert between Jesus and the Devil (Matthew 4 and Luke 4). Doesn’t that fit nicely with the words “… attacks him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his spoil?”

So, to conclude this simple thinking explanation for why some stand not believing in total depravity but want to hold on to some goodness about and in themselves as a partaker with Christ in making them party to their soul’s salvation, synergism (they simply don’t believe the Gospel means total depravity because they are not apart of the Elect); why some stand believing in the doctrines of Grace, total depravity and and and, realizing it is by Grace through Faith that without Christ and His single handed defeat of sin, the world, death and the devil, they would be lost forever and ever after they die then thrown into the lake of fire, monergism (the Elect who believe in limited atonement) and that Satan and his angels are on a short chain and can only come to tempt us as God allows it until we pass to our Eternal House in Christ with to live with God in His Eternal Glory thereafter or Christ returns; I say the Holy Spirit opens the minds of His people by His sanctification work done so as to come to know why He comes to convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment.

Christ died for all men but did not atone for all men. Christ died so that Satan and his angels will finally end up in the lake of fire.

The question one needs to ask is, “did Christ die for me too?”

I believe the Elect will know the answer. I believe the devils know the answer. I believe there are some still sitting in darkness that need to be asked that question and the Holy Spirit will give them the answer. I believe there are some who when asked that question will protest their innocence and reject the Gospel of the Kingdom answer.

  4. I love how Jim McClarty rightly divides the word of God and shows that “limited atonement” is taught in God’s word throughout. we simply cannot get past the verses where Jesus clearly spoke of choosing a specific people he died for unless we are being disingenuous to the word of God as a whole.. A person has to do an eisegesis instead of an exegesis which causes them to end up pitting verses against each other..Jim even explains those isolated favorite texts by those who disagree which contain ALL or the WORLD to try and refute the passages..

Problem with that is they’ve never done a deep study or listened to someone who knows the Greek and accepted the fact that there’s several different meanings for the word “ALL” in Greek– and the word “WORLD” doesn’t always mean the whole WORLD according to the text. The words have to be interpreted properly in it’s context. So for those who don’t bend their knee to what God’s word actually teaches it goes to show they are myopic in their approach to Scripture and interpretation of the word of God in LIGHT of the word of God as a WHOLE.

  5. McClarty is a blessing indeed, as is Dr. Boice. He once commented on 2 Peter 3:9 ‘the Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.’ He gave his understanding of this verse, which is that Peter was not of all people, but only the elect; Peter’s point being that God has not yet brought the final judgment but, rather, is delaying it so that the full number of the elect might be born, come to faith in Christ, and live for him. This makes perfect sense when you read other passages that deal with the doctrine of election and limited atonement. However, these biblical truths fly in the face of man’s pride, and his ability to have a part in and take credit for his salvation.

Your questions is a bit confusing. Anyway, the gospel must be preached to all people. Those whom the Father has chosen will respond. (immediately or in time) Since I’m not omniscient, I can’t look at an individual and determine if he or she is the elect of God. As I said before, “The elect of God are walking the streets today; they just don’t know it,” but they will when they hear the message, and they will respond, immediately or in time!

  10. David – God is Sovereign. He determines the end and the means. This means He will make sure every one of His elect will hear the Gospel and be saved. None can be added to that number, none can be lost from it. All were chosen before the foundation of the world! He is faithful.

  11. David,

where do you stand in this debate? Do you believe in total depravity and limited atonement?

    As for this question:

“What would be the point of the elect to prove to the non-elect if they really don’t have a choice?”

I have a Scriptural answer. It may not make any sense to you at all? We don’t have to prove anything to the non-elect. God does that by sending the Holy Spirit to convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment. He does that through the proclamation of the Gospel.

In any event, here is what I would answer utilizing the Word of God:

Col 2:13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,
Col 2:14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
Col 2:15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
Col 2:16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath.
Col 2:17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.
Col 2:18 Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind,
Col 2:19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.
Col 2:20 If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations–
Col 2:21 “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch”
Col 2:22 (referring to things that all perish as they are used)–according to human precepts and teachings?
Col 2:23 These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

There is a lot of things in those Words.

Basically once you are baptized into Christ’s death you are raised again to “His” newness of Life and for the rest of your days as a Spirit filled born again Believer you have what I referenced before in another post a purpose of election living as His Elect in the fallen world.

Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. That’s God way of making people alive with Christ to live in this life before passing to the next.

We can see from the following words from Psalm 149 then some of what we now do as True Believers in the fallen world we were taken out of so that we now live in the world not of the world like we did before being taken out of it after hearing the message of the Gospel of the Kingdom:

Psa 149:6 Let the high praises of God be in their throats and two-edged swords in their hands,
Psa 149:7 to execute vengeance on the nations and punishments on the peoples,
Psa 149:8 to bind their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron,
Psa 149:9 to execute on them the judgment written! This is honor for all his godly ones. Praise the LORD!

  12. David,
    What you fail to understand is that it is NOT up to us to save sinners, God will save those He has elected. You are so hung up on this doctrine of election and obviously do not believe in it; so I suggest you get a Bible and read the following verses – – -Romans 9:11 ‘though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad–in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls–‘ {here is commentary from Matthew Henry on this verse “God foresaw both Esau and Jacob as born in sin, by nature children of wrath even as others. If left to themselves they would have continued in sin through life; but for wise and holy reasons, not made known to us, he purposed to change Jacob’s heart, and to leave Esau to his perverseness.}
    verse 18 ‘So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.’ Again, I give you commentary, this time from John Gill, “which is the just and natural consequence of what is contained in the latter; for if God could, or he did, without any injustice, raise up Pharaoh, and harden his heart against him and his people, that he might rise up against him and destroy him by his power for his own glory, then he may harden any other person, and even whom he will: now this hardening of men’s hearts may be understood in perfect agreement with the justice and holiness of God: men first harden their own hearts by sinning, as Pharaoh did; what God does, is by leaving them to the hardness of their hearts, denying them that grace which only can soften them, and which he is not obliged to give, and therefore does them no injustice in withholding it from them; by sending them both mercies and judgments, which through the corruption of their hearts, are the means of the greater hardening of them; so judgments in the case of Pharaoh, and mercies in the case of others; see Isa_6:10; by delivering them up into the hands of Satan, and to their own lusts, which they themselves approve of; and by giving them up to a judicial blindness and hardness of heart, as a just punishment for their impieties.{Read from Romans 9:11-23 as well}

Another example is found in Romans 8:33, “Who will bring a charge against God’s elect?” The word ‘elect’ comes from the Greek word ‘eklektos’ and is defined by Thayers Greek Definitions as 1) picked out, chosen
    1a) chosen by God
1a1) to obtain salvation through Christ
1a1a) Christians are called “chosen or elect” of God

Those who cannot comprehend this doctrine do so because they fail to understand all of mankind is wicked, vile and deserving of nothing but eternal wrath. Your problem is not with us, it is with God and His word. He has a right to save whom He wills and leave in sin whom He wills. The fact that He saves any is amazing.

Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

The Elect of God indeed recognize that Satan and his angels “know” God and “know” about the wrath about to come upon them! At least for them, they shudder!

And for us, the Elect, these things are truth:

Luk 12:1 In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Luk 12:2 Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.
Luk 12:3 Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops.
Luk 12:4 “I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do.
Luk 12:5 But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!

unless there comes a change in the conversation between you and me, which I have to say, I think that last comment directed towards me by you was the first one directed towards me by you, I am going to heed Linda’s admonition with Scripture!

I will leave off with these Words in reply to your question first then wait to see how you will respond?

You asked me: “Michael why are these verses bringing you chills if not for an indication of doubt.(sic)”

    Here’s my Biblical reply:

Psa 96:9 Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness; tremble before him, all the earth!
Psa 96:10 Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns! Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.”

Psa 99:1 The LORD reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!
Psa 99:2 The LORD is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples.
Psa 99:3 Let them praise your great and awesome name! Holy is he!

Psa 114:7 Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob,
Psa 114:8 who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of water.

Isa 66:5 Hear the word of the LORD, you who tremble at his word: “Your brothers who hate you and cast you out for my name’s sake have said, ‘Let the LORD be glorified, that we may see your joy’; but it is they who shall be put to shame.
