For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.
– The Apostle Paul
2 Timothy 4:3-4
They once sat with me in church, listening to the Gospel being preached, listening to the word of God being faithfully proclaimed. They had all the outward appearance of being my brethren. For years we seemed to enjoy sweet fellowship together. Then some of them left to follow a “really cool”, “relevant” preacher who spoke like they had never heard before. He was earthy, irreverent, anti-religious, “new thinking”. But since he had a basic orthodox statement, said the name of Jesus a lot, and his church was growing, well, that was proof to them he was God’s annointed. And they learned from him to not be so “serious” and “religious”, that Jesus was not as they had been previously taught. They learned from him that the Bible only has some primary doctrines, the rest are all secondary and open to interpretation. They learned from him to reinterpret the Scriptures according to his philosophies and earthy mindset. And I watched my friends change. I watched them become proud, irreverent, worldly, fleshly, and perverse. I watched them grow unloving and self-centered. When I tried to show my friends from the Scriptures how his teachings were a mixture of truth and (the grossest of) errors, they refused to listen to a word of it. Rather, they defended their precious preacher as if they were defending God Himself. And like Paul, they counted me their worst enemy, because I told them the truth. And then it occurred to me, the problem wasn’t so much that they were deceived by this wolf. It was that they chose to ignore the clear truth of God’s word, and turned to follow a man, because he gave them what they truly wanted. And God allowed them to have what they lusted for.

Wow, David!
A truly sad account… heart-breaking… but not too surprising.
Matthew 7:13-14
13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”
