Does Anyone Else Find This Weird?

At WorldNetDaily’s Weekend Commentary, Jonathan Falwell wrote about the increasing revulsion of the Bible and how the United States has, as a nation, discounted and ignored God’s Word. He concluded by exhorting Christians to continue reaching out despite the fact that the world will hate us and revile God’s Truth.

Well said, Pastor, though I found this a little disturbing yet slightly amusing as I finished reading your article:

REMINDER: On Aug. 11-13, the historic Thomas Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Va., will host the Innovate Church conference, with “The Purpose-Driven Life” author Rick Warren serving as our headline speaker. Other special guests include: Chuck Colson, Tom Mullins, Jim Cymbala and Ed Stetzer.

It makes me wonder what your stance is, really. On one hand you decry the revulsion of God’s Truth and exhort many to boldly go forth with it, yet on the other hand you have invited one man — Rick Warren who not only waters down the Gospel but preaches another — to your church to “… empower and energize the ministries of pastors, pastors’ wives, church staff members and lay leaders across our nation”?

Is it me or is there a sharp contrast between what he writes and what he seems to subscribe to?

  1. I wonder why anyone is talking about this conference? Since everyone is blogging many concerns about Rick Warren and his watering down messages. What would Jim Cymbala have to do with this type of conference. His church was not built on man standards or church growth methods. It was started from a prayer meeting that was standing room only. I don’t know about Chuck Colson and his beliefs, but I knew he was radically converted in prison. Since every one is on the band wagon of Ray preaching at the WoF conference. Are the principles different, is one more extreme than the other? Is false teaching have degrees?

    Just some thoughts.

  2. Sorry, my bad; I made a boo boo. It’s Jonathan. I saw “Falwell” and the name Jerry must have been immediately synonymous with it somehow.

    I’ve made the necessary changes.

    My apologies.

  3. Chuck Colson may have had a radical experience in prison, but is now preaching the “joys” of the Catholic church. He authored Evangelicals and Catholics Together. He is as much a false prophet as is Warren.
As for Jonathan, a man’s true colors cannot be hidden forever. To be swayed by the pressure for success as he follows his father must be a crushing weight. Perhaps if he were more atuned to the Savior’s Heart this would not even be occuring.

  4. didn’t know that about Chuck Colson…maybe we should write Jim Cymbala to openly rebuke him, as others requested Ray Comfort to do! Hypocrisy. Is a false prophet or false teacher that proclaims prosperity different than one who promotes something else, like eucemenical believes? How is that different?

I will have to look into this Colson thing though, of course it wouldn’t surprise me. The more one seems to be in the lime light, the more they bend for others.

  5. I think that Jerry Falwell would never have even considered inviting someone like Rick Warren to speak at his church. We are seeing prophecy being fulfilled before our very eyes. 2nd Timothy 4:3-4(NIV) “For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” I think the worst thing that ever happened to the Church in America is the lack of persecution. It has enabled the false teachers and false prophets to have free reign and a willing audience in our churches. In places where even calling yourself a Christian can cost you everything (including your life) there are no pretend Christians or even luke warm ones nor are false teachers present because persecution culls those who are not genuine disciples of Jesus Christ. Perhaps what we should be praying for is persecution because even if it means pain for us who are true believers it will also separate those who are false from those who are true. Look up, for our redemption draws near.
