Quotes (602)

tozer.jpg The loneliness of the Christian results from his walk with God in an ungodly world, a walk that must often take him away from the fellowship of good Christians as well as from that of the unregenerate world. His God-given instincts cry out for companionship with others of his kind, others who can understand his longings, his aspirations, his absorption in the love of Christ; and because within his circle of friends there are so few who share his inner experiences he is forced to walk alone.

The unsatisfied longings of the prophets for human understanding caused them to cry out in their complaint, and even our Lord Himself suffered in the same way.

The man [or woman] who has passed on into the divine Presence in actual inner experience will not find many who understand him. He finds few who care to talk about that which is the supreme object of his interest, so he is often silent and preoccupied in the midst of noisy religious shoptalk. For this he earns the reputation of being dull and over-serious, so he is avoided and the gulf between him and society widens.

He searches for friends upon whose garments he can detect the smell of myrrh and aloes and cassia out of the ivory palaces, and finding few or none he, like Mary of old, keeps these things in his heart.

It is this very loneliness that throws him back upon God. His inability to find human companionship drives him to seek in God what he can find nowhere else.

  2. Thankfully He will sometimes answer your prayers and lead you to someone who shares with you “the smell of myrrh and aloes and cassia out of the ivory palaces”. Still it is very rare that you will agree on everything.

But there really is no better companion than Jesus. 🙂

  4. This is very true and we have found this to be the case! So many people have called us over-serious and dull because we want to talk about the Lord. “Lighten up,” they say. I wonder sometimes what they mean because we tell jokes and have a great time! We just don’t have loads of friends because when we disciple and it hits a sore spot with them, they disappear into the woodwork (after telling us we’re judging, of course). Yes, Tozer definitely knew what he was talking about!

  5. Wow! This really gave me a big spiritual lift. So many times I am given the cold shoulder and have been avoided even by family (especially my children)because of my love for the Lord and wanting to talk about the peace and love I have in Christ Jesus. To share the joy, the happiness and of course His Word.
Indeed, it is a lonely walk but one I intend to finish. I do get down at times but then I call on my Lord to comfort me and he never fails me.
Thank you Michael for posting this at a time we need encouragement and to keep our eyes on the Lord.

  6. So refreshing and encouraging. I sometime wonder what is wrong with me, I am an outcast with my family and also Christians I know. One thing I have become convinced of, I can live without these people, but I cannot live without my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Lord where would I go for you have the words of life.
