I have a question for you, Pilgrim. Does the abortion issue help you decide which candidate you’ll vote for? I ask because within the Christian community that seems to be the case.
Before reading the rest of what I’m writing, please note that I am a Republican, and have been registered as such since age 18.
Abortion is horrible. Photos like this do their best to show that, obviously. And there are videos online where you can see what happens. The cameras film everything. If a person is “pro-choice”, I don’t see how the could possibly view the realities of abortion and not have their opinion changed.
That being said:
I really think the abortion issue is a political hot button for Republicans, and nothing more. Not one of the Republicans who have been in office since Roe v. Wade have seen it overturned, and there have been DECADES of Republican “rule” in which to accomplish such. Not one of them will do so in the future. It is used as a political tool during elections, and then forgotten about it until it is time to run for office again.
A Republican was in office when abortion was made legal. He was powerless to do anything about it. The same can be said for any future Republican candidate: they’ll be powerless to change the legality of abortion.
Ah! But what about the SUPREME COURT, you might ask?
We can talk about possible nominees to the Supreme Court until we’re blue in the face, but the reality of life is that yet another conservative nominee will not change a thing!
Here is what I mean:
Of the 9 Justices currently serving,
1 was appointed by President Ford
2 were appointed by President Reagan
2 were appointed by President Clinton
2 were appointed by George Bush, Senior
2 were appointed by George Bush, Junior
So with 7 out of 9 Justices appointed by Republicans I ask, has abortion gone away?
No.
Will it?
Sadly, I doubt it.
When deciding which candidate I’ll vote for, the abortion issue is not part of my consideration simply because I know that no matter what a candidate’s opinions on the topic, pro or con, they will not change anything.

Dear Donny,
Mark this day on the calendar because we actually agree! I know it’s breathtaking, but I couldn’t agree with you more on what you said.
As I have come to grow closer to the Lord within the past year, many things have changed in my life and I’ve come to see many things more clearly now. Some of these include the holiness of God, the fear of God, the role of works in a Believer’s life, living faith vs dead faith, the amount of heresy running rampant within the churches today, (just to name a few things).
Another one of these realizations is that Christians spend way too much time involved social issues over and beyond what should be spent in the Great Commission. And there’s no finer example than in the realm of politics. So many professing Christians thin that they can somehow usher in Heaven on earth if they just elect the right person.
I used to be very much into politics but now I have steered as far from it as possible. No matter who gets elected things will stay the same (actually we’re progressively getting worse).
That’s why I’ve gone on record saying that I don’t care who gets elected, even if it’s Mitt Romney. (Of course all those who have the mistaken perception that I hate Mormons will be shocked by that, but it’s true).
I actually plan to post a piece on why I believe the worst president elected (whoever that may be) would be the best thing for the Church. I was planning on writing that after the candidates for each party running were selected. Unfortunately I am so out of the loop regarding politics now, I don’t even know when that will be.
In answer to your question, I actually have no intention at this time of voting. (I can almost hear the collective gasp of some who think that’s un-American).

I could be mistaken but I believe the majority of Supreme Court Justices’ that were serving when Roe v. Wade was decided were appointed by republicans also.
Basically if you’re pro choice a republican is your best friend but people don’t want to believe that.
I agree with Donny and Pilgrim on this and I look forward to your post on “why I believe the worst president elected (whoever that may be) would be the best thing for the Church.”
I also agree with you on that as well.

I believe that national politics has been controlled by those with the biggest pocketbooks for a long time as well – which leaves me out of the loop. Local politics (city council, school boards etc.) have a much more direct impact on my life & Christianity and I see that my vote & influence has made a difference over the years – especially when my Christian candidate wins 245-235 and proceeds to spearhead and pass an anti-gang ordinance as well as a no pornography sold within 1 mile of the schools ordinance among others. Making a difference starts in our homes, then our home towns.
