Saying It Like It Is?

Here’s a church sign put up by a congregation in Blacklick, Ohio in response to the hit single I Kissed A Girl (And Liked It) by Katy Perry (WARNING: site opens in a new window and plays songs from her album automatically).

ABC reports:

KATY PERRY’S SONG USED AS CHURCH WARNING TO TEENS

BLACKLICK, Ohio (AP) — A church near Columbus, Ohio, is using Katy Perry as a bad example. A sign outside Havens Corners Church in Blacklick has the lyrics from her song, “I kissed a girl and I liked it” — but it adds, “Then I went to hell.” Church pastor Reverend Dave Allison says the Bible is clear that homosexuality is a sin, so the sign is intended as a loving warning to teens. He says it’s confused some people who either don’t know the song or don’t understand the message. Lynne Bowman of the gay rights group Equality Ohio says the sign indicates the church isn’t very accepting. Perry has not responded to calls for comment.

Obviously, those who come across the sign would have to have some inkling of the song and what its lyrics glorify to understand why kissing a girl would send someone to hell. It’s no wonder, too, that the world, and I presume, (perhaps) a section of Christians who are liberal in their outlook, is up in arms over this “offensive” message.

What do you think? Good or bad call on the part of the pastor? Is this a case of “tell it like it is” or can the message about homosexuality as a sin be better put forward?

  1. I certainly wouldn’t feel comfortable with a sign like this at my church!

Just an interesting tid-bit of information:

Did you know that Katy Perry was actually a “Christian” musician who went by the name of Katy Hudson? Why the change? She said in an interview, “the heavens opened my eyes when I stumbled upon a Queen record and I was forever saved”.

I would have never known anything about this (since I’ve never heard of this girl in her pseudo-Christian years, nor her post pseudo-Christian years) had it not been for Ingrid reporting on this a little while back. Check out more about it here on Slice. Ingrid also featured a letter from a reader who had a horrible event happen to her daughter related to this song.

P.S. Speaking of musicians who claim to be Christians, check out this revealing testimony of someone who recently went to a P.O.D. concert.

  2. It definitely gets the point across…the way sin is glossed over may explain why this pastor used such a dramatic tactic to get the point across. I don’t know if it is commendable or not; we are dealing with a society that openly welcomes all types of sexual immorality, then throws the ‘stone throwing, judgmental’ verses at those who dare say the word ‘repent’. Let’s face it, the church has gotten so lax in preaching on sin, hell, repentance, wrath, and judgment that most Christians get ‘fired up’ when these things are mentioned. Perhaps sticking to bible verses would be a much better way to evangelize the lost homosexual.

  3. I understand where the pastor was coming from. I don’t like the fact that Katy Perry used “christianity’ as a stepping stone to stardom and now leads a blatantly sinful lifestyle but I wouldn’t want my children reading that sign at church so I thinks its inappropriate.

  4. How about this instead:

“Never mind kissing girls, ‘Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way.’ (Psalm 2:12)”

  5. I think the stand that the church is taking is fine, in the sense that it is not conforming to the post-modern liberal view that homosexuality isn’t a sin. However I do think that the church needs to be more careful in placing a sign like this up, simply because it will be misunderstood by so many. We have all seen the crazy baptist family from the states who are outrageous fundamentalists and claimed the war on Iraq was God’s judgement on America. There was no grace in their claim, and in a similar fashion my worry about this sign is that many Homosexuals or non-Christians will take this as a sign of hate; of hell fire and brimstone without the grace that God offers to the repentant sinner. As Christians we are to love the lost………that includes homosexuals however it doesnt mean that we change biblical truth and start endorsing their behaviour……….. i think this sign, whilst I am sure the pastor doesn’t intend for it to be, in some way may make homosexuals feel victimised. With signs you have got to b so careful because peoples own minds translate the meaning…ie one person may read this and understand what is meant….whereas another may read it and consider themselves to be hated by the church.
