Quotes (737)

Nothing is a greater bar to a minister’s usefulness, or renders him more contemptible than a known attachment to money, a gripping fist and a hard heart.

A day will come when mercenary preachers will wish they had begged their bread from door to door or had been chained to the oar of a galley for life rather than have presumed to intrude into the church such base and unworthy views.

– John Newton

  1. He’d probably be taken to court for defamation allegations. Those powerful yet humble men of yesteryear would faint at what the church of Jesus Christ has become today. Utterly pathetic.

  2. But the modern man-pleasing preachers quote John 10:10 and the last phrase in 1 Tim 6:17 to support their stand. (I am not making that up.)

Yet, perhaps, they need to read all of 1 Tim chapter 6 and maybe even Philippians 3:18 & 19 – “For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.) “

  3. Not only would they faint revivalandreformation, they would probably do a bit of “temple cleansing”!

Manfred: that Philippians Scripture is such a sad one, always gives me pause. Mercy, Lord Jesus.

    Great quote.
Sad to say I know a few of these kind of people, can’t really call them “pastors”.

  4. What will be sad to see one day is “pastors” shaking hands with the enemy in the name of self preservation, betraying those who aren’t getting with the program. Sound familiar?

  5. It’s a good thing Jesse Duplantis personally went to Heaven and got his own private revelation from Jesus. Otherwise, the Bible Verses that support this quote would shoot the whole shaky foundation of his “ministry” right out from under him.

  6. Its what we have been seeing from some of those who claim they are Gods. They add the pleasure’s of the world to the Gospel. They hang on to the world and all its pleasures and call it Christian with a covering of their righteousness. I think they are blind to the righteousness of Gods, being blinded by the things of the world.
One thing thou lackest yet: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. But when he heard these things, he became exceeding sorrowful; for he was very rich.
Some of you arn’t even rich and you still can’t get lose from the trapings of the world. Well that time is coming an end for this world, it would seem they would look to what is real, but they show who they really love….the world.

  7. I heard a “pastor” one time quote this passage in defense of those who criticized Christians wanting to be rich. He said that Jesus said it would be harder for a camel to go through the eye of a needle…he said God would just have to make a really big needle! Ugh…the blatant ignorance of these leaders and those who blindly follow after them. Like a bunch of Lemmings…

  8. From my previous church, a budget meeting flyer had Malachi 3:10 quoted on the front and several pithy sayings inside. My favorite was “Your heart always follows your money.”
