Halloween, Harvest Party, or Reformation Day?

I know that there’s many perspectives on whether or not Christians should celebrate Halloween. Many churches have chosen to celebrate it by putting their “Christian” spin on it; calling it a Harvest Party. Even more churches completely ignore the fact that this Wednesday will mark the 490th anniversary since Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the Roman Catholic Church. Sadly most people will never even be told that fact in their church because it has nothing to do with this week’s positive and relevant message. (I know I was never told). So what’s your perspective on this coming holiday?

Check out this interesting disclaimer from a church advertisement for their Harvest Party:

Costumes should be of a fun nature–keeping with the Harvest Theme is appreciated. Costumes should be modest in design. No witches or ghosts. No costumes with evil or dark connotations that would promote evil.

Is it just me or does anyone else see anything remotely out of whack with this? If you’re going to have to provide a disclaimer of this type, perhaps taking a Satanic holiday and trying to put a Christian spin on it probably isn’t the best thing to do.

Now I know first hand that this particular church bends over backward to not offend anyone so I wonder how they will react to those families that will have not seen the disclaimer and will inevitably arrive with little Zack dressed as a zombie and Wanda as a witch. I am confident they’ll look the other way and allow just a little more leaven in.

Perhaps abstaining from even the appearance of evil is the best rule of thumb here. What do you think?

ryle.jpg   Consider how unreasonable this fear of man is. How short lived is man’s hosility, and how little harm he can do! “Who are you that you fear mortal men, the sons of men, who are but grass, that you forget the Lord your Maker, who stretched out the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth?” (Isaiah 51:12-13). And how thankless is this fear! No one will really think better of you for it. The world always respects those the most who act boldly for God. Oh, break these bonds, and cast these chains from you! Never be ashamed of letting men see that you want to go to Heaven. Do not think it a disgrace to show that you are a servant of God. Never be afraid of doing what is right.

Does your pastor live in a 3.6 million dollar home?

Thanks to Independent Conservative for keeping us aware of what men like this are gaining from the “gospel.” I was actually more surprised by the results of the news poll at the end of the video than I was that yet another preacher is using the Gospel to live like a king.

With all the damage that men like this do to the true Gospel of Jesus Christ, is it any wonder why Atheism is growing?

bible-page.jpg I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked . . .

Does the “W” really stand for “Watch?”

Here’s the website selling the official I Worship Watch Joel Osteen lapel pin. It’s just another example of our bloated excess as the Western Church lives in the comfortable lap of luxury.

I wonder how many Christians who are going without food in their stomachs or Scriptures in their hands in the poorest parts of India are going to order this as a Christmas present. I wonder how many Christians who are fleeing from Mulsims trying to kill them, or who are being tortured in a communist prison cell are itching to get their hands on this.

Can we expect WWJD (What Would Joel Do?) anytime soon?

yahannan.jpg I began with alarm to understand how misplaced are the spiritual values of most Western believers. Sad to say, it appeared to me that for the most part they had absorbed the same humanistic and materialistic values that dominated the secular culture. Almost immediately I sensed an awesome judgment was hanging over the United States–and that I had to warn God’s people that He was not going to lavish this abundance on them forever.

ryle.jpg The thought, “What will my friends say or think of me?” nips many good inclination in the bud. The fear of being looked at, laughed at, ridiculed, prevents many a good habit from being taken up. There are Bibles that would be read this very day, if the owners dared. They know they ought to read them, but they are afraid: “What will people say?” There are knees that would be bent in prayer this very night, but the fear of man forbids it: “What would my wife, my brother, my friend, my companion say, if they saw me praying?” Oh, what wretched slavery this is and yet how common!

bible-page.jpg [The rich man] will say to [his] soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry.” But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?”
