Ryle was pretty “riled up” (pardon the pun), judging by some of his quotes, over “real” faith and “fake” faith being demonstrated by the degree of sanctification in one’s life. Is it possible he went too far in this regard? Lot had a had a faith that seemed pretty “devilish” judging by his actions, but it was nevertheless a saving faith.
I guess I’d have to read the whole Ryle sermons or books for context to understand better.
Yes, this quote was taken from a much broader context. I got it from his great book Holiness which I highly recommend reading.
I also highly recommend a much smaller book of his entitled Warnings to the Churches. I have been meaning to post a book review on this one but just haven’t yet. I’ll do it soon though.
The most amazing thing about reading Ryle is that you have to stop and keep telling yourself he gave these messages over 100 years ago. You keep forgetting that because it seems he’s writing and speaking on England (and America) today.
GREAT quote! Reminds me of James’ statement; faith without action is dead.

I wish we had more preachers like him today!
