Obama Was Re-elected??

Yesterday, November 6, 2012, was election day in America. Two major party candidates, incumbent President, Barack Obama and challenger, Mitt Romney, waited for the results as the American people cast their votes. In the end, President Obama retained his office for another four years. Today, a great many Christians, greatly dismayed by the election results, are asking themselves, “Now what?”

From the moment I saw the results come in, I observed just about every possible response on social media. Some expressed outrage, others denied Mr. Obama would ever be their president, some half-jokingly talked of joining Texas in a secession from the Union. Yet, some remembered the scriptures and God’s sovereignty, “Daniel answered and said: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might. He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings…” (Daniel 2:20-21a).” There are no powers and authorities in this world that God has not established. Some He sets up for a blessing, some He establishes in judgment. But all are set in power for God’s glory alone.

The reason I write this is to encourage and remind the brethren that our hope is not in the governments and powers of this world, but in the King is the true power and authority over all things. When Jesus stood before Pilate, He said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world,” (John 18:36). Jesus established at that time that we are not to seek deliverance in worldly authority, but in Him alone. Therefore, our joy is not contingent on which candidate is elected, it is in the One who rules over us eternally. We do not find peace in presidents, congressman and governors, but in the One who willingly allowed those earthly authorities to crucify Him on our behalf.

Knowing this, we can read and submit to Romans 13: 1-7, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.” We submit, not because we believe in all the party platforms of the person in authority. We submit, because we honor the Lord who saved us and placed that person in power.

Now before everyone thinks I am suggesting that means we should just bow before every unjust ruling the government enforces, I am not advocating some sort of weak kneed, wishy-washy pacivity. Remember that when commanded by the Sanhedrin to cease preaching the name of Christ, Peter and John said, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard,” (Acts 4:19-20). When it came to obeying the commands of God, specifically in this case, the preaching of the gospel, the apostles understood, their obedience to the Lord superseded man’s authority. No earthly authority can command us to disobey the express commands of our Lord and Savior. If and when we are commanded to cease serving and obeying the Lord, then we may stand in opposition to earthly authorities.

This also does not mean that we stand idly by while we watch the authorities God has established abuse their power by promoting immoral and sinful laws. When we see the propagation of laws allowing for the wanton murder of children through abortion, or when we see the religious institution of marriage profaned through promotion of state recognized homosexual unions, we should stand up proclaiming “Thus saith the Lord…” in opposition to them. We should call our representatives and demand they honor the commands of God. We should file suit when unjust laws are passed. We should work within the God ordained governmental system to bring righteous laws into place. However, our hope is NOT in the establishment of those laws, it is in the One who established the system itself. We honor Him when we work peaceably within the system, rather than in rebelliousness or talk of secession.

So if our hope is not within the system, but in the Lord, what do we do? In 1 Timothy 2:1-3, we read, “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior…” In other words, we need to be in continual prayer for those in authority over us, that they would come to repentance and faith in Christ, that God would grant them wisdom in their decisions and that they would honor God in their deeds. Also, we need to be about the preaching of the gospel to all we meet. Our hope for a country that is righteous and honoring to God is not in elected officials, but in the hearts that are changed through the power of the gospel. Only God can regenerate a sin hardened heart. Only by someone being made a new creation, with a heart inclined to obey God, will men and women desire to live in a culture that is free from immorality and decadence. While we do not preach the gospel to make culture better, but to save souls, a by product of regenerated hearts is a culture that begins to honor the Lord.

My encouragement to those who read this is to remember that our hope is not in who did or did not get elected last night. Our hope is in the sovereign Lord who saved us. Seek to honor and obey Him above all.

  2. Good word brother … I offer the following excerpt as another way and means of viewing the re-election of Barack Obama as President of the United States:

“(One of the many methods) God uses to leads us in his will (are His decrees). God sovereignly decrees and designs circumstances so that we end up where He wants us to be even if we don’t have any conscious part in getting there. For example, Paul and Silas found themselves in jail, and the result was the salvation of the jailer and his household (Acts 16:24-34). This was God’s plan, but not Paul’s. God does this often—putting us in places that we did not plan or decide to be. This is the leading of decree. It is unique … because it includes (all our decisions) and because it happens infallibly (since “no purpose of [God’s] can be thwarted,” Job 42:2). (From “Four Ways God Leads His People”, October 1, 1996, by John Piper).

Another view would include: “A consciousness of our powerlessness should cast us upon Him who has all power. Here then is where a vision and view of God’s sovereignty helps, for it reveals His sufficiency and shows us our insufficiency.” (Arthur W. Pink)

I prayerfully support President Obama, his family, his cabinet and the country he serves; the country I love. “It is what it is” and the years that lie ahead are already known to God. For America to receive the blessing of God, all leaders, from the leaders of each and every household to the court house, to the White House, all leaders must seek, discern, and submit to the decreed will of God.

The time for a prayerful pulling together has undoubtedly occurred. I realize there are some disappointments as well as some who are satisfied. Yet, as a people of a country, whose members still retains the freedoms of speech, religious expression, and the right to participate in the government; we must exercise those rights now as we face an uncertain future. As we would pull together in prayer for one another and the recently elected leaders, we are seeking unity (in the face of disparate views) under the decreed will of the Sovereign God who has the power to reposition America to her former world status.

“Lord – reunite this great land by Your decrees. Place a resolve in the hearts of all men and women of America to return to seeking and obeying Your decrees. Forgive us when we fail and bless us when we are the obedient nation You originally established. I ask these things today – In Your name …. Amen.”

Blessings for the day and hope in the Lord as we face tomorrow and the tomorrows that would follow … Bro. Steve

  3. Since he is not a natural born citizen, he is not nor can he be President. He is a fraud and usurper, thought by many to be the President. That office, he occupies – he does not hold it legitimately.

  4. Yet, God in His sovereignty has allowed him to become President. If he can be proven to be there illegally, and can be removed through the legal process, Christians can be involved in that. But as long as God has appointed him to the position of authority, we respect that office because we desire to honor and obey God.

  5. Being a pilgrim here in America and a citizen of a Kingdom not of this world, I trust in Him who has the only true government upon His shoulders. Thus I went to bed early election eve and slept soundly.
“You can’t legislate morality,” is a truism, but then so is “You can legislate immorality!”
For this is what continues to happen.
It puzzles me, how christians can become more upset about an election then they are about the elect, yet still reprobate. But then any system that puts a laity clergy divide as it’s basis, inviting the world in to fellowship with unbelievers, preaching a cheap grace gospel, and being silent in the market place…except to promote a safer alternative to worldly pagan celebrations, is a carnal replacement for the costliest of Grace. And a feather in Jezebel’s Hat. While the only true Gospel that we, being all clergy are to go out and preach is silenced. For in the last days there will be a famine in the land-of His Word.
His Word is true, and amazingly relevant and accurate for our age, for those who have eyes and ears to see and hear, and is profitable to those whose lives are transformed through Holy Spirit conviction unto repentance…

  6. I come at this from this angle. First I would look at some words from Revelation and an admonition there. Then I would note a couple of verses, one from Revelation and one from Hebrews to bring a “visionary” focus of where we are heading fixing our eyes on Jesus the Author and finisher of our Faith. Then I want to look at two verses, one from Philippians and one from 1 Corinthians and finally I want to bring it all together from 1 Chronicles and Daniel ending at Psalm 46.

I see in the article you posted from Daniel and those Words should weigh so heavy in our spirits they sink to the depths of our soul?

Here goes the way I see things now after the election.

First consider this admonition and ask yourself how are you doing with that in this world today? If you are blest to live in the United States there are some active things one can do to maintain the Peace and Unity of the Spirit in the Spirit no matter what laws are passed. I don’t suppose that will always be the case, though?

    Rev 18:4 Then I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues;
Rev 18:5 for her sins are heaped high as heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities.
Rev 18:6 Pay her back as she herself has paid back others, and repay her double for her deeds; mix a double portion for her in the cup she mixed.

A couple of things to note of several from those verses there. One, how are you doing “coming” out of this present evil world? What are you doing to “pay” her back double for her deeds?

Now, supposing you reading this are full blown Born Again Spirit Filled Believers I would ask you to focus on both of these outcomes, one outcome is the outcome of the Righteous in the Lord and the other is the outcome of those who will spend eternity separated from the Joy of the Lord.

Heb 9:27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
Heb 9:28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

Are you of those “eagerly waiting for Him”?

Rev 1:7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.

Are you one who will wail when He returns or you pass out of this life into the next?

I am finding out about myself that the more I learn and come to know of the Lord the less I know and the weaker I am before Him; and, that increases my desire to know Him more and more each day walking daily in the power and anointing of the Holy Spirit. Consider the outcome of those who don’t know Christ when He returns. How much greater is it for those who have already died in their sins?

How wonderful the thought about those who died in Christ’s Righteousness having been washed, sanctified and justified in Him!

How does one stay focused on Christ when the world is ever increasing in wickedness and sin and depravity is being legislated legal in our world or in the particular country we reside in?

Well consider these two verses, one from Philippians when it comes to you personally and one from 1 Corinthians when it comes to God’s Justice applied to every soul in every generation?

Php 3:20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
Php 3:21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

1Co 15:22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
1Co 15:23 But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.
1Co 15:24 Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power.
1Co 15:25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.
1Co 15:26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

Christ has indeed been given all authority in heaven and on earth! How are we doing revealing this to the world and the souls of the nations of her?

We see no struggling by Christ given to Him (the power of Jesus Christ) in those two places, Philippians and 1 Corinthians. In none of those words, let me ask, is there any doubts raised in your heart and mind as to His ability to save His people from their sins transforming our lowly bodies or destroying every rule and every authority and power?

Finally I want to end looking at some insights God gave King David and the Prophet Daniel that clearly apply to us in this hour and day now that we are looking ahead to the day of the Lord, either our personal day of departure when we breathe our last or when He returns to bring an end to this present created heavens and earth.

King David had a song sung and part of it can now become a prayer and a vision for each of us to pray and hold too as the days of darkness increase across the world and in the nations.

1Ch 16:31 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice, and let them say among the nations, “The LORD reigns!”
1Ch 16:32 Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it!
1Ch 16:33 Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth.
1Ch 16:34 Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!

If you can let those words sink deep into your soul you might begin to understand just what sorts of authority we have been given possession of with Christ in this world and then these verses from Daniel just might begin to make sense to you too and you too will separate yourself from this present evil world, having nothing to do with it but rather, like many Saints already, continue constant in prayer and seek the favor of the Lord in all that you do.

Dan 2:44 And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever,
Dan 2:45 just as you saw that a stone was cut from a mountain by no human hand, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold. A great God has made known to the king what shall be after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation sure.”

I propose to say that if you indeed are truly born again then that new birth was of God and you too are one of the living stones cut out of that mountain by no human hand!

We wrestle not with flesh and blood but will principalities and powers of spiritual wickedness in a world full of devils. This worldwide spiritually wicked Babylon indeed has become a dwelling place for demons, a haunt for every unclean spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird, a haunt for every unclean and detestable beast.

Not so for our hearts, though. Our hearts are to be the holy dwelling places of the Most High:

Psa 46:4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.
Psa 46:5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.
Psa 46:6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts.
Psa 46:7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

  7. Mickey: I have this vague sense you’re insulting people who don’t agree with you, but other than that, I don’t understand what exactly your point is. Can you clarify what exactly you mean?

  8. There are more ways to kill a baby than through abortion alone (i.e., lack of access to proper healthcare for mother and child, becoming bankrupt if you get sick, lack of nutritious food for adults and children, lack of proper clothing, etc.). Thus, the Obama Administration has important moral and family values. We can always pray that they will champion even more. We serve an awesome, prayer-answering God. Why aren’t pro-lifers kneeling and praying in front of clinics and hospitals protesting inadequate healthcare? Where are the pro-healthcare signs and banners during noisy, pro-life rallies? Why are many pro-lifers against healthcare as a right for all? These issues are very closely related to be really consistent in our views.

In regard to gays serving the military, I see no problem if someone wants to risk his or her life for my country. After all, homosexuals have been serving in our armed forces very faithfully and valiantly since the founding of our republic in 1776. Let us continue to pray for President Obama that God will grant him more than human wisdom in his important decision-making role for our country.

  9. Mickey said: “It puzzles me, how christians can become more upset about an election then they are about the elect”

Amen Mickey. say that they are moral and increased with value votes but they are poor blind miserable and naked despite their “doctrinal soundness”.

  10. Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

That includes politicians and people who post blog comments. It is quite one thing to have differing views about how (or if) people should vote. It is quite another to minimise the importance of evil.

“Moral values” are defined by Scripture, and Scripture alone.

  11. Dennis, too many Christians i know are naive and have been deceived by the world already under the guise of benevolance and satan won’t fool the world by wearing 666 on his forehead and carrying a pitchfork. Dig a bit deeper, GM foods mean no nutrition and playing God with food in the name of profit. Obamas healthcare means secret billion dollar deals with Biotech/Big Pharma to totally control your body, what you eat and to leave no child left undrugged under the guise of healthcare for all. Nano particles for all and goodness knows what else these hellish for profit only scientists foist upon the human race under the guise of “we know what’s for you” You only see the contrived “family image” you are supposed to see and as John writes above, morals values are defined by scripture alone not by secular humanism. Has Obama’s magic spell made you conform to the corporate worlds values?
Of course it could be God’s will to put Obama in power for his purposes and prophesy but that does not mean you have to be deceived and that evil cannot pose as good. I don’t vote BTW so am not biased by either camp but i do observe.the times.
“be as wise as serpents and as innocent as doves”

  12. “Has Obama’s magic spell made you conform to the corporate worlds values?”

If it has, it would pail to the republicans party control of evangelical christianity.

  13. Thank you for that encouraging word. Our hope is not in the “kingdoms” of this world, but in the government of our Father. In fact we need to exercise our hope that He can most certainly perform anything He pleases “in” this world but not “of” this world! Amen!
