Because the preaching of the Gospel is so low, the church is basically—the majority of it—are carnal lost people. And because it is a democracy, they, by and large, govern the direction of the church. And because the pastor doesn’t want to lose the great number of people and because he has wrong ideas regarding evangelism and true conversion, he caters to the wicked in his church and his little group of true sheep that belong to Jesus Christ are sitting there in the midst of all the theater, in the midst of all the worldliness, in the midst of all the multi-media going, “We just want to worship Jesus and we just want someone to teach us the Bible,” and pastors are going to pay for that. . . . Trying to keep together a bunch of wicked people while a little flock in the midst of them are starving to death and are made to go in directions they don’t want to go with the carnal majority.
– Paul Washer
Mr Washer is probably correct in his view of the majority of people attending “church” are lost. However, it seems that he mixes works as a pre-requisite for those who are saved. Didn’t Paul say it was not by works, lest any man should boast? Where is the standard? How good is good enough? If not for the blood of Christ that completely covered my sin, and my faith in that alone, I, and everyone else on earth would be doomed to hell.

I think he makes it clear that works are a post-condition for those who are saved. You can’t be saved through a simple act of prayer (though the occasion of your conversion may be marked by that prayer). He’s asking for evidence of faith. If I say the sky is orange, or I’ve driven 3 Ferrari’s you’d ask me to prove it. The works follow the change. You don’t have to be perfect (though you should try to be), but there should be some evidence that a change has occurred. Yes, we can move to deathbed confessionals and the fact that there may be no evidence of change, but we should put those aside. Washer is saying that we need to remember that there is a narrow way (doing the will of our Father in Heaven), and that our churches have become democratic (the will of the people) instead of God-ruled (the will of the Spirit).

Washer has absolutely nailed modern Evangelical willowcreek/purpose driven/marketing/athropocentric/church growth/success driven Churchianity. This is exactly how the sheep feel in such an environment.
