thomas-watsonWhat is the popish religion, but a bundle of ridiculous ceremonies! Their candles, beads, crucifixes; what are these but Satan’s policy, to dress up a carnal worship, fitted to carnal minds! Oh! what cause have we to bless God for delivering us from popery!

– Thomas Watson

  1. The majority of Christianity uses such things- the Anglicans, Catholics, orthodox so Thomas Watson is really a minority in this one. However, the Jews have pretty lively places of worship- are their services any less worthy.

  2. Juanisaac- don’t forget what God’s word says, ‘ But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.’ John 4:23,24. No mechanical habitual worship is suitable, only a heartfelt worship will do, as the Spirit leads the true child of God. ‘Appearance’ is non essential in the eyes of God; we worship Him everyday.
‘Orthodox’ borders outward tradition, it prompts mechanical heartless outward gestures, offered up to a Holy God as man’s idea of worship.
As for Watson being in the minority, he’s in good company. God has had and will continue to have His true remnant, those who truly worship Him as He is revealed in His word; and inward worship that manifests itself through His Spirit.
It’s interesting to note the Roman Catholics who kiss the ring/hand of their beloved pope. This is an act of worship! This is idolatrous. A meaning for worship is ‘to kiss the hand to (towards) one, in token of reverence’ -Greek-proskyneō- strong’s number 4352

What does the Lord Jesus Christ say? ‘For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ Matthew 4:10
