If I see aright, the cross of popular evangelicalism is not the cross of the New Testament. It is, rather, a new bright ornament upon the bosom of a self-assured and carnal Christianity. The old cross slew men; the new cross entertains them. The old cross condemned; the new cross amuses. The old cross destroyed confidence in the flesh; the new cross encourages it.
– A. W. Tozer
1897 – 1963
Tozer is one of my favorites. His truly was a voice crying in the wilderness, if you understand the religious climate of his day.
Harley Howard said of A. W. Tozer:
“A. W Tozer, unquestionably one of the greatest men who ever preached the Bible, was a man ridiculed while he lived because he was so “out of touch” with the religious establishment around him. What made him so “out of touch” with those around him was the fact that he was so “in touch” with God.”
