Sermon of the week: “The Curse Motif of the Atonement” by R.C. Sproul.

Your sermon of the week is The Curse Motif of the Atonement by R.C. Sproul. I’ve had this message on my MP3 player for a while now and only got around to listening to it the other day. Wow. I wish I had listened to it earlier.

I’ve never been what you’d call a “fan” of R.C. Sproul, but this message is spot on and powerful. If you only listen to one R.C. Sproul sermon in your whole life, this should be it.

  1. I agree with you in two ways:

    1. I’m not a fan of R.C. Sproul’s preaching, even though he preaches the Truth ( I find him hard to listen to for any length of time).

    2. This is a Great sermon.

  2. Ditto on fandom. Good sermon – I’ve heard an excerpt from it before: his comment about the Gospel being “obscene”.

    I think we DO need to be reminded of how horrible sin is – the sin we each commit – and how great the sacrifice of Christ. Otherwise we tend to fall into the trap of thinking we weren’t all that bad and Christ becomes less instead of more.

    For that reason, praise God for Sproul’s message and for the proprietors of this site for posting it.

  5. Being a fan or not is merely a matter of preference – not substance. It’s like peas vs. spinach. I like peas, don’t like spinach. I do not say spinach isn’t good for the body, only I don’t like the way it tastes. So it is with RC – aside from the family covenant aspect, I think he is a solidly truthful preacher of the Word. It’s his voice – near monotone, etc. – that I don’t like, not his message.

  7. I wholeheartedly agree with Manfred’s estimation about Sproul. He’s hard to listen to but this sermon was definitely an exception. A great sermon!

    However, I wouldn’t liken him with peas or spinach since I think both are good. I’d say it’s more like spinach and green pepper. :o)

    Have any of you listened to his son, RC Sproul Jr.? We received a few of his sermons from Vision Forum and I was not the least bit impressed. I’d rather listen to his father.

    Oh, and BTW, can you enlighten me (and some of our readers) on the whole “family covenant” stuff?

  8. It wasn’t until God gave me an insatiable thirst for God’s Word (27 years after a profession of faith!) that I started craving for real meat. By God’s Grace, that’s what R.C. Sproul delivers each time. It’s hard to chew, but I could never say that his voice is monotonous! He gets really excited and emotional when speaking about our Holy God! It has been a great blessing to read “Table Talk” magazines for over 4 years, and listen to “Renewing Your Mind” each day. I’ve just downloaded this sermon, but I already know I’d better put on my seatbelts!
    I pray for R.C. Sproul each day and that the Lord will raise such faithful leaders and speakers for our benefit!
