Sermon of the week: “The Charismatic Movement” by Phil Johnson.

Your sermon of the week is entitled The Charismatic Movement.

A former Charismatic himself, Phil Johnson examines this movement from its recent beginnings (January 1, 1901) to it’s position today in mainstream Christianity. He tactfully, and Scripturally exposes the errors of Charismatic theology (and the damaging effects it has on those who adhere to it) in this message.

If you have any questions about this abhorrent movement, I cannot recommend this message enough.

  1. A great defense of the sovereignty of God. I understand his position (refuting charismatics) but I think “Experiencing God” is a bigger danger – in the exact same aspect – as are the charismatics.

  2. I’d be interested to hear what Phil has to say.

I have heard messages that simply speak much of the more fringe dwelling wack jobs (eg Hobart Freeman and his “glory barn) but never really heard a critque of the more indepth and a little closer to home errors of those who are “charismatic” to the back teeth!

I mean technically speaking anybody who is not a cessationist (like Phil) are infact charismatics………….

It is only those pentecostal/charismatic/ignorantly-arminian/toungue speaking/”prophetic” loving “charismatics” that are the appropriate group to be exposed.

    Yes……. its semantics I know……but true nonetheless……..right? 🙂

  3. I have never heard a person who claimed the gift of tongues to actually speak in a known language.
I have never seen a person who claimed to be a Prophet be 100% correct.(maybe 10-15% correct)

  4. Tongues, as you will hear in charismatic circles and similar places, are not unlike those found in many demonic religions that manifest during periods of ecstasy and trance-like states. These states being aroused often by music, drums and repetitive chantings. Very similar in type to what you find in many churches via the mindless and hypnotic 7-11 “praise and worship” songs and accompanying mantras.

Also, tongues are the one gift that can be easily faked and learned as you go through charismania-101 classes or observe those around you. Yet as parapatriot noted, I’ve yet to see one go forth and declare the gospel to peoples of other languages as done in the books of Acts. Likewise, I’ve yet to see the miracles wrought at the hands of the disciples accompany the tongue speakers, notwithstanding what Benny Hinn and company say.

I hope people will leave behind the false doctrine of the Charismatics and not be puffed up in pride as so many are who claim the gift of tongues, and rather become as children, run to the feet of Jesus, and esteem others better than yourself.

  5. I used to be in the pentecostal movement. Teachings were similar to what the AOG teaches.
One of the things that brought me out of it was I began to ask myself is would Jesus do anything that scares little children.
I remembered being a little scared of the things that went on in the church when I was a child.
One time a friend of my sisters went to church with her and my mom. The little girl was terrified and started crying and she had to go sit in the car until church was over.
That poor girl who is now in her twenties could have heard the Gospel for the first time but, instead was scared out of the church by “a move of the spirit”. Which they would just say that the devil in her was scared and made her leave.

Now some of my family members think that I have backslidden since leaving the movement.
They also think I am a bad person because I will not let my mom take my son to her pentecostal church.
Too bad that they can’t see that they treat the Holy Spirit like Chi or an impersonable force.

Not to mention whenever “the spirit moved” there was usually no Scripture read or a sermon preached.

  6. Acidri – I took a quick look at your blog and love it! Seems to be solid and the pix you’ve chosen to illustrate your topics are most effective. I’ll be back when I have some to read rather than scan. Blessings from the swamp known as Houston.

  7. i got mixed up with charasmatic people who were very extreme –
i don’t beat myself up for it now because it is very hard to avoid it, given how rapidly and widely it is spread though the churches –
recovering from the hurts is taking a real long time.
I did have many disputes with folks about many of the beleifs and practices they had within the movement and i resisted being dragged into those things.
basically i rejected those wrong teachings, and those people rejected me. so one is left with a long lonely journey … where i live i have not found any churiches or christan groiups that i can fit into so far – the area i live in is very heavily charasmatic – it is so frustrating that those people judge me as not being spirtitual – it is good to see here that many people do leave it and see sense at some point – so there is hope – for all those people and for the churches – i am going to hold onto this hope and pray that there will come a time when a loud voice will be presnt in this town and that people will hear it and see the errors of the charasmatic movemnt and leave it in droves turning to truth s i pray – not just for my town – but for my countryand more
