Sermon of the week: “Dating” by Paul Washer.

Your sermon of the week is–without a doubt–going to step on some toes, but it is one that needs to be heard. Paul washer pulls no punches in his message simply entitled: Dating.

I found myself saying out loud, “Amen, Paul Washer, Amen” when he compared a teenage boy’s desire to date his daughter without his consent like that of the theft of his truck. (You have to hear it in its context to truly appreciate it.)

This message is a combination of three shorter talks he gave on the subject of recreational dating (for a total run time of around 90 minutes) and it is a must-hear for those whose kids are dating or about to engage in dating.

If you’re not sure whether this sermon is worth your while, just listen to the first ten seconds. It’s not a message everyone will want to hear, but then again, DefCon’s not known for posting sermons that tickle the ear.

If you want to hear more on the subject of dating, see Pastor Tim Conway’s message The Ungodly Practice of Dating found on this previous post.

  1. This is one of (if not the) first Paul Washer messages I ever heard way back when. I can tell you from experience that unless your church is very very exceptional, this teaching (although Biblical and correct) will NOT be received well among church families who encourage even their pre-school children to have little “boyfriends” and “girlfriends” and encourage and allow their teenaged children to engage in all sorts of temptation-filled behavior. Nobody got mad over condemnations of drinking, gambling, cursing, tithing, even inappropriate clothing – but question “dating”???? Look out!

  2. Mr. Washer’s ideas on courtship are largely based (or at least similar) to those of Douglas Wilson, and although Mr. Washer says that he has some theological differences with Mr. Wilson, he recommends his book on courtship. However, if you do some searching on Mr. Wilson and Christ Church in Moscow, Idaho, you’ll find that he’s a very unsavoury character, and his views on courtship can’t really be separated from his views on everything else.

  3. If I ask for personal wisdom in my own situation with my girlfriend will anyone be here to respond? I was hoping to get the opinion of some of those who are running the blog, I believe the Holy Spirit was speaking to me about my relationship last night and about how I was unequally yoked with my girlfriend and I just want to talk about it a little here in a safe context
