Wake Up Church!

Have you been watching the news this week? If you have, like the rest of us, you are probably aghast at the sight of American embassies in the Middle East overrun by Muslims and our ambassadors being hurt or killed. And, like the rest of us, you may be wondering why on Earth our government isn’t doing something about it. You might be wondering how our government, or the media, or people in general, can be so blind to the fact that Islam is in fact a religion of subjugation and violence, and how they can pretend it is not what we see being played out in front of the cameras on the evening news. You might just see this as the reason you need to get far more politically involved than ever before, because, after all, if this administration cannot see the threat, then it is time for someone else to take the reigns, right? Yeah, I imagine a lot of people are thinking that right now.

But, if you are a Christian, I have to ask you a serious question, one that might make you a little uncomfortable. If you see Islam as a threat, if you see the danger that a satanic religion represents, if you see the harm it has caused to so many people, what are you doing about it? I’m not talking about taking up arms here. I’m not talking about some sort of militant activism either. And yes, I recognize there are hundreds, and thousands of muslims who have never so much as looked cross eyed at another person. I recognize there are many who would never even dream of committing acts of physical violence, so please do not misconstrue what I am saying here. I’m talking about what are you doing about the lost souls who bow to Mecca five times a day trying with all their might to please Allah. What are you doing to break them out of the works based, man centered religion that drives them to these acts. If you recognize that this religion, which is at the heart of so many problems in the Middle East, is truly a false and dangerous religion, what are you doing to change it?

Let me put it another way. When you go to church this week, why will you go? To be built up and strengthened so you may go forth and preach the gospel? Or will you go to be entertained and have your self esteem boosted? Will you walk out of church so in love with the Savior that you cannot help but to preach the gospel? Or will you walk out happy that God has made your life so comfortable? See, the point of church is not to make us feel better about ourselves and our lives. It is to make us love Jesus all the more and to drive us into the world, into spiritual battle, so that we might take the gospel to the ends of the earth. However, I fear that a great many people who attend church this Sunday might go there shaking their heads about the terrible things that have happened this week, but will come out feeling so nice and comfy about how much God has a wonderful plan for their lives. It will not even cross their minds that God has commanded them to preach the gospel, and that the answer to the violence in the Middle East is not in governments, political sanctions or military actions, it is in that very gospel they are commanded to preach!

The violence and tragedy in the Middle East this week needs to be a wake up call, not so much for the government, but for the church. For far too long, we have sat by and watched as church growth programs, self esteem seminars and entertainment industries have corrupted the church. We have been too satisfied to see the undershepherds who have been called to equip us for battle lay down that duty to entertain and amuse us. Yes, numbers in the churches grew, but those numbers represented nothing more than false converts because they never once heard the call to repent of their self centered sinfulness and cling to the cross seeking the mercy of the Savior. Church, we must repent of this! We have been commanded by our Savior to preach His gospel unto every nation! And can there be any further evidence that this world needs the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ than what we are seeing happen right now?

Those in the Middle East who have perpetrated these atrocities are sinners like you and me! They need Jesus Christ to wash away their sinfulness through His shed blood alone! They are trapped in a works righteous religion that calls them to appease their “god” through works, through man centered efforts, which will never atone for their sin. If we want see change in the Middle East, it can ONLY come through the gospel! It is the only thing which can change the heart of wicked and sinful man. No government plan, no sanction, no political overhaul can change man’s heart, only the power of the Holy Spirit can accomplish that. And God has ordained that it is through His gospel message that it will be accomplished.

Christians, wake up! When you go to church this Sunday, don’t be satisfied to sit back and be entertained. Weep over sin, starting first with your own. Glorify God that He sent His Son to die for sinners and to save them from the fires of Hell. And then be moved to preach the gospel in every way possible. Obviously, not all of us are called to be foreign missionaries, but maybe God has equipped you to support them. Maybe you can even start your own ministry here in America that will send missionaries over seas. You can even be a missionary here in your own hometown. Start preaching the gospel now, where you live. Share it with someone today. Let the turmoil in our world be the wake up call that makes you realize that God has called you to share the only thing that can change the hearts of men. The only thing that can bring them out of the treadmill of work righteousness. The only thing that can bring them from death to life. Preach the gospel today!

  1. Chris Hohnholz; what an indictment, what a wake-up call for me and some of my fellow, comfortable Christian friends. Oh, if we would all really and honestly totally submit to the Lordship of Christ and then just do what He has told us to do, namely “Therefore go …… (Matthew 28; 19 – 20)

  2. All our family will be voting for Mr. Romney we do not believe he will run the country by mormonism
like Mr. Obama will by his faith of Muslim. We have not had a Christian president in the last years even thoug Jimmy Carter claimed to be born again. We are not voting for a pastor but
US President. We are Christians and conservatives.
May God Bless and save America.

  3. Jesus Christ is the only Savior there is and how very sad that so few in the world know that. They seek many other religions thinking they are the answer when only Christ can save! How thankful I am to know Him and to have His peace in my heart.

  4. Thanks Chris for a great post! Black, white, yellow, brown or red, the message to everyone is always the same;
“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:15)

  5. Over 7 million Muslims visit America each year, while over 1 million move here to attend College.
There is a mission field in almost each city, some more so than others. Visit Carm.org or Crescent Project to learn how to build bridges with Muslims(not over months, but WHILE you are sharing Christ THAT DAY!) by overcoming their false idea’s about Christianity (they think Mary is the 3 rd person in the trinity, another is they think the Koran teaches that it was given to correct the errors in the Jews/Christians Bibles, IT WAS NOT, it was sent to CONFIRM the previous books (Torah & New Testament, they are also falsely taught the Koran teaches the Torah was for Jews only and the New Testament(injeel) was for Christians, they were not ONLY for the Jews & Christians, Crescent Project shows you where in the Koran you can go to show the Muslim their errors, as well as confirming the Koran was sen tot CONFIRM the Bible, not correct it), the idea that the Bible was corrupted was invented by a 10th century Imam who say the differences between the Koran and the Bibles teachings about God & Jesus, and unable to reconcile them, decided the Koran was correct. Knowing these things BEFORE you witness to a Muslim will give you the ability to effectively share Christ. One last thing, The Koran COMMANDS all faithful Muslims to read the previous revelations (1st 5 books of the OT, along with the Psalms & Proverbs and the NT) so there you have it as to why they should read the Bible! One last thing, it is best not to try to witness to more than one Muslim, if they are in a group they will not be as willing to admit you are correct, but if they are alone, they might be more receptive. As even in America Islam is more than just a religion, it is their life, involving family and career, so to leave it is not just to change a religious view, it is like the Jewish religion, they might lose everything. Of Course I am not saying they should not, but it is best to know why they might resist in a group, versus a single encounter.

  6. My dearLela, I think that it is just possible that you might have missed the thrust of Chris’ post as indicated by your mentioning of things in the political arena.
To my mind Chris was saying that we cannot turn to outside forces of what-ever nature to combat issues like the Islamic religion. In other words, even in ‘desperation’, we cannot resort to Mormons or any other group to help us. It is towards ourselves that we must turn. It is me, you and the rest of The Church that must today shake off the shackles of politics, lack of obedience to His Word, lack of time (so called) and all else that stops us from going out into the world – in His strength – with a gospel message ringing out loud and clear. I do not believe that there is anything that can oppose a totally obediant totally surrended church that totally accepts the Lordship of Christ.
Incidentally Lela, Obama is most decidedly not a Muslim, never has been, isn’t and will never be having declared that he adheres to the Christian faith. I’m afraid that perhaps you have succumbed to Tea Party or Romney camp propaganda and I do think we, as Christians should be very careful and check on all stories before we pass them on; and that’s what I understand Scripture to say.

  7. Hi Mickey Merrie, believing that I was really getting out of my depth as a rather dumb South African by joining in commenting with the mature, thinking Christians that are regulars on this site, I really didn’t want to make another comment, but feel constrained to do so.
I’ll start with an occurrence of a good few years ago. A Christian teacher I had a great deal of respect for and whose teachings, in my view, were always of the soundest. After he returned to the USA after many years of labouring in the field here in Afrrica, to my great joy, he continued his teaching via internet. One day, to my great surprise, he sent an email to all his students, and presumably others, promoting Bush Jr as the next President to be voted for. He did this on the strength of Bush’s “Christianity”. Apparently this man did not take into account what Lela earlier here said, “We aren’t choosing a Pastor, but a President who we believe will best benefit all Americans” (A choice we, unfortunately don’t have in South Africa, here a president is chosen for us).
At the end of Bushes term, how may Americans, Christian Americans, were left that supported him?
I looked at the site you posted and listened to the video you posted subsequently and I’m not sure exactly what you’re promoting but I do sense that as did Lela, you might also have been unwittingly misled by the great deceiver into attempting to move the focus from yourself – and me, and The Church – onto the political front and what they can do and cannot do.
Chris’ post was aimed, Mickey, at you and Lela and me and the rest of His Church suggesting (an understatement) what only we can do in the world today.
May I, at the risk of possible unintentionally offending you, ask what exactly you, and for that matter Lela, will do in response to Chris’ post that you and me, as His Church along with all other believers, WAKE UP?

He adheres to the Christian faith!!! Really! Please give me a few examples!
On the flip side of the coin, are you aware that he is the most pro-abortion president in history! And just for the record, there are folks all over the world calling themselves Christians and most haven’t a clue what it means to repent and trust the Lord Jesus completely!

  9. Amen to this post.

What if the professing churches sent our young men to lay down their lives in the Middle East to preach the Gospel? Instead we have hardened the hearts of Muslims and brought reproach to Jesus Christ by sending our young men to kill Arabs in defense of Caesars interests. Hitler’s Lutheran soldiers, the popes Christian crusaders, and now the Christian rights evangelical army. Is it any wonder that they look at western “Christian” society and call it the great satan. In a sense they are correct.

I was talking to a Muslim man while out preaching in Detroit late one night and everything he had against the Gospel was all based on the false Christianity of our day. He had no real objection to the true Gospel…. because he had actually never heard it before, only a million false ones he had been presented with.

  10. “And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet.” Matthew 24:6

The signs of the endtimes is revealed throughout scripture e.g. Daniel, Ezekiel, Matthew, 2 Thessalonians, Revelation, etc. Events in recent times – increasing incidences of earthquakes, the proliferation of false teachers and persecution of true believers, lukewarmness and apostasy in the “Laodicean” church today, as well as wars and conflict, point to the fulfillment of these signs. It appears that Yahweh is slowly withdrawing His withholding hand of grace – across the organised church, in families and nations – and we are destroying ourselves.

A form of Islam is playing, and will continue to play a prominent role in the endtimes – in fulfillment of biblical prophecy.

By the illumination of the Holy Spirit, there is an urgent need to put on a full biblical worldview of the times we live in, in accordance with what Yahweh says about the last days. Yahweh desires obedience more than sacrifice, hence the need to fully grasp “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matt 28:19-20 We often quote and attempt to practice verse 19, but we often totally omit verse 20 – the equally important command ‘teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you…’ And it is especially in the context of the Islamic world that we have to keep this in mind – the need to have a continuing relationship of discipling.

“Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.” 2 Peter 1:10

  11. No offense, brother! My focus too is in waking up the sleeping virgins, both wise and foolish who will walk into a polling booth and set aside their faith by voting for the lesser of 2 evils. They will do this thinking that it is their duty to vote, forgetting Who’s government they are under. When their duty is complete, they will unwittingly realize they have run from the unmasked to the masked. Flee Babylon above gets it and sees too that the system today that does so much in Jesus’ name, thanks to traditions of men, are another’s system and a hinderence to the gospel of Jesus Christ, as it is 10,000 divisions and another’s false gospel. What so many reject are the religious and their receipe’s and never hear the true.
I don’t know of this teacher you were so fond of, but with regards to his political discernment of Bush’s christianity? In that regard he was totally lacking.

  12. By the way, we don’t choose our leaders here either. Rather we are always given a choice of 2 pre-selected agendas that in reality don’t have a dimes worth of difference when their agendas are complete. American churchianity is the very picture of the women riding the beast as the “church” rides the political system as a harlot, selling her perceived birthright for benefit. Most took 501(c)(3) status and now have their NGO’s under daddy Bush’s 1000 points of light.
Anything that isn’t OF Him, ROM Him, FOR Him, THROUGH Him, and TO Him, and His
Pre-emmenance is a dead work. The true church is the Ekklesia He builds. The gathering of living stones and Him as the Corner Stone gather wherever 2 or 3 or any number gather in His name to build up each other. The elders FUNCTION as ministers as they pour out in service their lives for the youngers as they teach them to accurately go out and preach the Good News to the lost and dying. The Holy Spirit convicts the sinner to repentance, and then they, being new creation join the body, to be built up in accurate gospel understanding. When we follow the example of the only church the gates of hell will not prevail against, the results will be the same and the elders will then too have lives that mirror the Apostles. The promise? A cross to bear, and persecution even unto the death as a witness. Then eternal life with our Lord. Is THAT what you see in churchianity today? NO! You see the fulfillment of Jeremiah 5…
We all are clergy! We have a mission which is as Chris says to go out and preach the gospel accurately, and allow the Holy Spirit to bring the increase! This idea of inviting the world in is the satanic fulfillment of the tares being sown in with the wheat. I do not participate in this error!
But the traditions of men make His Word of no effect. Those who have eyes to see and ears to hear get it, those who don’t have a religion about Jesus, and think they have a relationship with Jesus. Remember it is the Do-ers and not the hearers that He calls His own. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth…

  13. “By the way, we don’t choose our leaders here either. Rather we are always given a choice of 2 pre-selected agendas that in reality don’t have a dimes worth of difference when their agendas are complete. American churchianity is the very picture of the women riding the beast as the “church” rides the political system as a harlot, selling her perceived birthright for benefit. ”

Very good point Mickey. When it comes down to it they want to protect their at ease in zion lifestyle at any cost. That is why they were so quick to send their boys to kill in the middle east to protect american interests. Evangelicals and christendom in america will make allegiance with the right to protect them in their si and apathy just as the compromised jews did similar in the former days.

We hate liberals, but we love our republicans that support and protect our fake christianity (really it’s moral theraputic deism) that doesnt cost us anything or cause us to have to rely on a living faith in Christ.

  14. For the edification of those not caught in churchianity any longer, here is another dear sister who gets it! Praise God, eyes are opening to the Truth of His Word! DefCon is great because the word is important. So many of us were in the experience God camp, and the Word helped lead us out. So many who are in the churches that still preach the Word, have substituted a relationship with a denominational receipe, and a legalism. So we have on the one side emotionalism, and one the other legalism…Both are receipes and not relations with Him as Lord. Let us all continually examine ourselves by the Word to see that we are in the Faith. Certainly our lives should more resemble that of Christ and His disciples, and not the lifestyle of America, even American churchianity and it’s delusions.

  15. Having engaged Muslims in debate, in testifying of my Faith in Christ and doing some business with some of them or traveled with them opening doors for them to do business in foreign countries, too, I have a down and dirty answer for you.

The answer why a lot is not being done by a lot of the Church is because of our self centeredness and selfishness. It can be risky doing business with Muslims on their terms. I know. I have.

And putting things into a Biblical perspective I find this verse most interesting in light of all the crowds that followed Jesus and the many times Scripture reveals crowds being inflamed by the Lord or others from Genesis to the book of Acts:

Php 2:20 For I have no one like him, who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare.

You don’t find many verses like this one in the Scriptures and you sure don’t find many hearts like his these days in Church!

If it was so in Paul’s day it will be just as so in ours.

Do the math. Of all the guys and gals that worked with Paul carry out his mandate, he writes of this one young man who had a heart genuinely concerned for others’ welfare. Hmmmmm! If a Pastor had just one of these in his congregation functioning fully he’d be very very happy, don’t you think?

I still believe what Jesus said when I read this: Joh 5:17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”

I’m of the opinion that God in spite of our moral shortcomings is still working the streets even today among all nations and people groups including those of the Islamic faiths in clearly Islamic nations.

  16. Here is an organization I support which broadcasts Christian programming into Arab countries. It is a Satelite network (SAT7 TV) located in the Middle East and run by Arab Christians. Their programs reach into even the darkest regions of Islam. There is programming just for children as well. If you are interested in learning more about this ministry, go to http://www.sat7.org/. (You can check out SAT 7’s rating for financial transparency by going to http://www.ministrywatch.com/profile/sat-7.aspx.). I get updates from SAT 7 each month and they are having a great impact since most of the people in the Arab world, even in the poorest regions, have access to Satelite TV. Just a suggestion for those seeking a ministry that is really having an impact..

  17. @ Mickey Merrie–thanks for the video on the lesser of 2 evils.. Loved it and I wholeheartedly agree with you even before I watched it..But I’ve learned how to deal with it as this young man was very articulate and very biblical. If I could I’d give you all 5 stars
