What’s Up, Ray Comfort?

Ray Comfort

Ray Comfort

Ken Silva at Apprising Ministries and Ingrid Schlueter at Slice of Laodicea disagree with Ray’s practice of participating in some conferences where he will be standing shoulder-to-shoulder with health and wealth heretics on the same stage. The more surprising thing is that this is not the first time that Ray has done this.

Having observed Ray’s ministry, I can say without much doubt that I know that he will strive to preach the Gospel as it is without hesitation. However, the issue here is not whether he will preach the Gospel, but whether Ray, whose radio show has on many occasions decried the practices of such heretics and their errant doctrines, should be seen to be in league with these heretics by his participation in such conferences.

I’m of two minds on this issue, not because I respect Ray and therefore am hesitant to point out that he’s wrong if it were indeed so, but because I think there are questions to be answered:

  1. Should Ray be seen to be associated with such WoF heretics though we have faith in his motivation to preach the Gospel at such conferences?
  2. Will such an approach, i.e. preaching the true Gospel in a heretical conference, be effective?
  3. Or is this a case where we can bring up the fact that though Jesus dined with sinners, he didn’t partake of their sinful ways but spoke His truth to them?

Thankfully, Ray has decided to respond openly to Ingrid here.

Having now read both sides of the story, I’d like to ask what your take on this is.

  1. I’m all for it, IF after he presents the clear gospel he says something to the effect of
“I’m sharing this with you because many of you have been deceived…” and then he points out the false doctrines that they have succumb to. (of course he would not be asked back if he did that)

That being said we need to remember that Ray is an evangelist. His main concern is presenting the gospel not pointing out error. (we could argue whether or not both need to be done at the same time) Maybe he feels that if he presents the truth of the Word and God moves people to repentance that they will see the error of their false gospel and false doctrines and that God will lead them into all truth. He plants the seeds someone else will have to water.

Without knowing Ray personally and knowing all the details of what he will preach etc. Its pretty hard to make a judgment call one way or the other. If I were an evangelist I don’t think I would do it but then again I don’t think I would have the nerve to witness to gang members in L.A. either. Ray pretty much stands alone in the way he does things. I read his e-mail response on slice and he sounded sincere. Everything that I have read or seen from him is straight on biblically so I’m not ready to jump on the “attack Ray” bandwagon. Maybe we need to just pray that God gives him discernment and helps him to do what God would have him do and if thats speaking at this conference then we should pray that souls would be saved and God would get the glory.

  2. Ray’s preaching at a WOF church revealed to me I was a false convert

I “accepted Jesus” in 1977 praying a sinners prayer from a Christian book in my office. I visited many churches but everywhere I visited I found a very lukewarm church. I ended up believing the faith message. I went to a local bible college and became a licensed and ordained minister of the Gospel “WOF style”. Soon afterwards I became the administrator of a WOF church with about a thousand members. After that I pastored a small church for about 2 years. I started watching The Way of the Master program in 05′ on TBN and thought it was great but did not fully grasp the underlying message. In March of 2006 in a motel room with my laptop I went to a faith church website to watch one of my favorite faith teachers. To my surprise I noticed that Ray Comfort had taught at their conference. I decided to watch the 2 messages that Ray taught. The first was Hell’s best kept Secret. This message raised my eyebrow and my curiosity. I knew it was scripturally correct and wondered why I had never heard this kind of message before. The next night I watched “True and False Conversion”. As I listened to Ray describe, plainly and scripturally, what a Christian was and was not, I fell under conviction for my sin. I was under a powerful conviction for 3 days crying out to God in repentance and begging for God to save me. I trembled before Him, realizing that I believed I was saved, but after examining myself scripturally, I knew I was LOST! How could I be deceived for 27 years, I had read the bible many, many times, studied it, meditated on it, loved it and preached it, I was horrified!

I thank God that Ray went to that faith church. Today, because of the faithful preaching of the word of God and by God’s grace I am truly changed. My life has been radically different. I am very sensitive to sin and now the fruit of Gods spirit is growing in me. I have taught the way of the master class at my church and regularly share my faith. I am also of the reformed faith now. My family has also been dramatically changed with many coming to true faith in Christ. I am very thankful to Ray for being obedient to God and thankful to God for redeeming me out of my deception.

This was my request to Ray:

    REQUEST:
Ray, please continue to be kind, patient, and understanding to those who do not understand the gospel, people like me. A. W. Tozer and Leonard Ravenhill both were bemoaning the fact that the church in America was almost lost in the 60’s. When I came to church in the late 70’s I wanted to know God and all I found was falsehood. When I was a teenager I went to a Baptist church and was asked to leave by the other youth because I didn’t fit in their “click”. I left, no one cared. When I “accepted Jesus” in 77 I went to a Lutheran, Methodist, Pentecostal church and finally stayed at a Baptist church. I again was unwelcome and found no one serious about reading and living the scriptures. I heard the faith message on the radio and thought, at last someone who loves the bible and is willing to believe it. I had no understanding to properly interpret the bible and after a while trusted these teachers. There are many people in all these doctrinally wrong churches, in “word of faith churches” who sincerely want to know God and unknowingly went into a place called church and were led astray. Please continue what you do and continue to reach out to help all who are false converts.

  3. Team DefCon already knows my view on this matter, but in a nutshell I believe those who have called Ray “on the carpet” with their predetermined opinions – which are based on the venue instead of the message – are guilty of jumping the gun in this matter.

Some have tried to paint Ray with the same broad brush as Ravi when he failed to tell the Mormons the truth, or with Rob Bell when he went to rub elbows with the Dalai Lama – but it just ain’t so!

Ravi’s decline into apostasy is documented and well known – and as far as anyone knows Rob Bell has never been anything but an apostate false teacher.

Ray Comfort is an evangelist who, as far as I can tell, faithfully presents the uncompromised and eternal gospel of grace whereby God is pleased to supernaturally and miraculously convert deadened, hell bound sinners into lively stones fitly joined together.

May those who are called by the name of the Lord of Glory never be found standing in opposition to the faithful proclamation of His Eternal Gospel of grace!

He didn’t compromise his message in the least. The true gospel message is powerful and reached my heart. I have since left that type of teaching and am grounded biblically. There are many like I was in those churches. I thank God for Ray Comfort preaching the Gospel in that place.

  6. I appreciate Ray and the WOM/LW ministry. Just think, WOM is on of the few solid programs on the flakey TBN empire of Paul and Jan (Barbie) Crouch. We need to pray earnestly for the man. I think it is acceptable for him to preach the gospel in a wayward church. Just imagine if he could have the opportunity to share the law and the true gospel in a big Roman Catholic Cathedral. We need to pray for a hedge of protection around Ray and his team. We need to lift them up that God might grant them discernment and direction as doors open for ministry. (This ought to be our prayer for ALL ministers that are still preaching the “real deal”.

  7. Amen Big Al!

Your testimony rings in my heart as well since the Lord of Glory saw fit to deliver me from a Charismatic Pentecostal WoF “vain-traditions-of-men” religious upbringing – AND HE DID IT THROUGH THE FAITHFUL PREACHING OF THE ETERNAL GOSPEL OF GRACE.

It has pleased the Lord to draw His children, whom He has foreknown from the foundations of the world, by the foolishness of the preaching of the cross.

The eternal gospel is the answer to the WoF heretics.

The eternal gospel is the solution to culture.

The eternal gospel is God’s chosen means whereby sinful, wretched, hopelessly lost sinners are miraculously and supernaturally converted into lively stones fitly joined together.

This is the Lord’s doing and it is marvelous in our eyes!

All the discernment in the world doesn’t matter a bit apart from the all-redeeming power of the glorious gospel of grace.

Certainly the WoF’ers are ravenous wolves in sheep’s clothing and ought to be soundly and roundly rebuked by true Bible believing, blood bought Christians everywhere – HOWEVER – when in our sincerest moments we should find that we begin to place preconditions on the PREACHING OF THE GOSPEL then we find ourselves in a spiritual no-man’s land. In fact if we are ever to be found in such a sorry estate then we will also be found to be standing over and against the Great Commission of our glorious Lord and Savior.

May such a thing never be named among those who believe on Him and Him alone.

  8. I’m actually confused why this is an issue. Really. This isn’t an issue unless Ray preaches a false Gospel. Until we actually see what he says/does in a venue, we are committing slander against our brother! I can assure you that the number of unsaved inside most places called a “church” can be as large as in a secular gathering outside a church!

Paul Washer goes into these venues, for those of you who know him, gets led by the Spirit to preach the Gospel, and then gets shown the door. He does this at church conferences and churches all over. He doesn’t get questioned for doing what Ray does…because of his track record. Should we not give Ray our prayers as he goes into the “Lion’s Den” that those who would hear him…would hear the words of God instead?

Now if Ray does not consistently preach the true Gospel, of course he should be called on it. But I more than support him going to a church full of unsaved folks. In fact, as others pointed out, they may have a higher proportion of starving sheep! And if his TV show is on a channel with a bunch of heresy, doesn’t it clearly state in his programs that “you have heard this” but “this is the truth” without naming names? It is up to us to preach the Gospel first, and once saved, then point out the wolves in sheep’s clothing. Otherwise, the latter to an unsaved person makes no sense! It can’t because it isn’t spiritually discerned.

In summary, the Bible says for us as believers:

    1. Preach the Gospel/Good News (everywhere, in and out of season!)

    2. Teach them to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength
    (discipleship)

    3. Feed on God’s word daily

    4. Watch out for wolves

I am not saying “don’t cut Ray some sslack”. He knows that those who preach an errant Gospel are eternally punished in hell (and the Word says so twice for emphasis). Pray for this known servant/worker in Christ, encourage him, let him preach, THEN let us decide if he is in error in his message, and then let us lovingly correct him IF, repeat, IF he preaches a false Gospel. And yes, I fully believe Jesus would preach at Saddleback and other places where the Gospel isn’t truthfully presented. Why wouldn’t He? Show me where it says in the Bible that He wouldn’t. He ticked off people at synagogues, etc. Sorry for thhe rant, but in this world right now, Ray needs our prayers and help!!!

We cannot seclude ourselves from the world {this borders on self-righteousness} and the deception that engulfs us, we must combat it with the weapon the Lord has provided, the sword of the Spirit. If we don’t go to them, how will they hear? This may be the ONLY time they ever hear the TRUE GOSPEL. Pray God will protect Ray, filling him with power from on High, opening hearts and minds to receive what the Lord gives Ray to preach. All who oppose Ray’s decision to go among the wolves, please pray for him.

  10. When Comfort talks about how to witness to homosexuals, he says there are 9 commandments to convict them of their sin, without having to discuss the sin they hold so dear. If God saves them, and grants them repentance, they’re not going to be homosexuals for long. They are new creations, and they’re radically different. They’ll have a new-found respect for God’s word, and they’ll want to change. (Not that it would necessarily be easy to change, but they’ll definitely want to change.) The Bible never says we have to confront the unsaved on every single sin they might be involved in.

If Comfort goes to this conference and regardless of whether he discusses these people’s idolatry of money or idolatry of a false Jesus, he has 9 other commandments to use. If God grants them repentance, they won’t be hanging around Jesse Duplantis much longer. Maybe even the speakers at the conference will get saved. It’s clear that they need to hear the true gospel as well.

The gospel is the power of God unto salvation (Romans 1:16). It is adequate for the task. We can trust that He who begins a good work will carry it through to completion.

    Good points, Laurie.
I would add that in a similar manner Christians who have accepted an ‘invitation’ to use the ‘world wide web’ to spread the Gospel on their own blogs, websites, etc. – are sharing that very same ‘cyber-pulpit’ with both true believers and false-prophets.

What seperates us from the wolves on the ‘net is preaching Christ’s true message. I trust Ray Comfort to continue to do the same at this conference and will pray for him, too.

  12. If he goes and does not point out the FALSE CHRIST and FALSE GOSPEL these men preach, irregardless of what he, Ray himself, says, he is just as guilty of promoting the false gospel. Christ rebuked the Pharisees and the apostles rebuked the false prophets…TO THE SHEEP. The error here is in giving credence to their false gospel and christ and putting their idle chatter on equal footing as the Gospel and Christ. That is the error. We need to be careful of acting as if Ray or any other teacher can not error. Even the apostles errored at times. If Ray is going there to share the Gospel and REBUKE these false charlatans, Glory to God. If he does not rebuke them and allows the sheep to listen to a false christ, he has condoned the false teaching by keeping quiet.

If Ray Comfort preaches the true gospel, then wouldn’t it stand to reason, that this would be a good thing for him to do? Preaching the true gospel at conference where there is sure to be a real lack of it!

Ray, like a great many of us, sincerely is concerned that the majority of people going to church are not even truly saved. I think the time to really start sounding off is if Ray starts to head down the road to glamor that many of the other professional heretics of done. If his message and character starts to change, then that is the time to start sounding the alarm.

In the mean time, as always, I believe it is wise to be ever watchful!

  15. Hi Diana,

Can you share some scriptures to back up your statements? I’d be particularly interested to see where preconditions to the preaching of the eternal gospel of grace exist in the Bible, or where the Lord attached caveats to His Great Commission.

Did Paul “give credence” to the unbelieving Jews when he preached the gospel from synagogue to synagogue or when he earnestly contended for the faith during his Mars Hill Discourse with the Athenian philosophers? Did his preaching there place the Athenian philosopher’s beliefs “on equal footing” with the eternal gospel?

Or what about Peter; did he “give credence” to the unbelievers to whom he preached the very first Christian sermon on the Day of Pentecost? Did his preaching there place his hearer’s false beliefs “on equal footing” with the eternal gospel?

Or how about the Lord Jesus Christ Himself; when he accepted invitations and ate with harlots, sinners, tax collectors and publicans (without preconditions); did He “give credence” to their debauched lifestyles or did He share the good news of the kingdom of God with them? Is the Lord Jesus Christ guilty of putting their sinful lifestyles “on equal footing” with His own eternal gospel?

The Lord certainly rebuked the Pharisees because they were self righteous and He knew the hardness of their willfully stubborn hearts. They rejected Christ because they trusted in themselves that they were righteous. Self righteousness was, is, and until the King returns always will be the rotten root of Pharisaical belief.

But back to your comment; please share just ONE example from scriptures where it seemed good to the Holy Spirit to refuse the proclamation of the eternal gospel of grace to sinners.

There plenty of instances in the Bible where preachers did what the average Christian today would frown on.

    Hosea – married a Harlot (Hosea 1:2)

Isaiah walked around naked (Isaiah 20:1-6)

As a sheep in a wolves convention, Ray Comfort needs prayer that he will be brave to preach the “true Gospel” and not sugar-coat it for the itching ears.

Better to stand outside the conference and preach the gospel and expose the heresy within, than to receive payment and personal promotion by his association with the vile teachings of the WoF crowd. He has no difficulty preaching the truth to the unsaved in a bold and tenacious way standing on any street corner; the deceived are no different, and they need the same bold approach taken to reveal the truth to them prior to their further exposure to heresy. Galatians 1:8,9 “But even if we, or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.” Bold words. Better to be well received of Him in heaven rather than by the fellowship of the accursed who preach another gospel not of Him.

I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.

12What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 13God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked man from among you.”

Preaching the gospel generally involves going and spending time with immoral, unsaved people. That is what we’re commanded to do. The only people we’re commanded not to associate with are those who call themselves our brothers, but live immorally.

If someone wants to convince me that Comfort shouldn’t go give these people the gospel, they should be showing that they have the true gospel, and the same Jesus, but are living immorally. Everything I’ve seen so far is how far off these people are, and the farther away from the Bible they are demonstrated to be, the more at ease I am with Comfort going there.

  29. I’m still looking for ONE scriptural precedent wherein ministers of the gospel placed preconditions or caveats upon the faithful proclamation of the gospel under ANY circumstances, or where any believer or group of believers are exhorted in the scriptures to place certain demands or conditions upon another believer in advance of the ministering of the gospel. It seems that something this important wouldn’t have been overlooked in the Bible say, for example, when the Lord Jesus Christ gave the Great Commission.

And although I think I have an explanation that I’ll go into later, I’m still a bit confused as to why some sovereign grace Christians apparently seem to believe that the Lord God Omnipotent is so powerless and thoughtless that He would miraculously regenerate His elect by the power of the faithful proclamation of His eternal gospel of grace and then simply abandon His child to languish and “drink poison” and thus be unfaithful to His promise to finish the good work that He has begun (Philippians 1:6). Can someone help me out here? What love is this? Amazing grace?

The power of the eternal gospel of grace is more than sufficient to overcome all the wiles and deceits of the enemy by God’s power alone. Have faith.

Finally if one wishes to quote Jude 3 then let’s please read on down through verses 21-23 and let’s be obedient to the WHOLE COUNSEL of God. The same goes for 2 Cor. 6:14-18 – the WoF cultists aren’t in the church so in its proper context this application fails the test as well – that is of course unless one were to consider the fact that 2 Cor is a FOLLOW UP to 1 Cor in which case we can look back and see another possibility (the one which I personally think is actually in play in this whole dust up) which is that Ray’s attendance at the conference is causing his brothers and sisters who are weaker in the faith to stumble (1 Cor 10:27-28). In this case Ray’s appearance definitely is given scriptural grounds for pause but in all other complaints lodged thus far the charges are simply out of context non-sequiturs and unbiblical straw man arguments.

If someone actually wants to make a compelling case as to why Ray shouldn’t preach the gospel at the WoF conference then someone should write to him and tell him that they’re weak in their faith and it will cause them to stumble if he does so.

The word of God clearly teaches both. A savior from sins power on our life whose eternal kingdom begins now, in our life when we are converted. Yet it seems you have no idea how exceedingly sinful sin is and the judgment and damnation to come upon the wicked. A danger incident is going to happen. Judgment must come. Dont flatter yourself otherwise, unless you are truly converted you are in danger of death, hell, and most of all the right judgments of God.

Mat 13:40 Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the close of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
