Our purest works are no better than filthy rags, when tried by the light of God’s holy law. . . . Our best things are stained and tainted with imperfection. They are all more or less incomplete, wrong in the motive or defective in the performance.
– J.C. Ryle

So many who claim to be Christians fail to understand this maxim. We do so like to think mankind is basically good – all the more why we need faithful men to point us to the Scriptures to see ourselves and our deeds as Ryle described them and see God as Holy, Holy, Holy!
