  1. Thanks for posting. I have always believed that Satan and his demons played a role in possessing Hitler and his aides to consider and carry out horrible and unspeakable acts during the war. Let this be a wake up call to some of those who unwittingly claim that Hitler was a Christian. Far from it indeed.

  2. I think that John Macarthur is setting up a straw man here. He is making a phenomenon like Hitler less complex than we ought to keep it, and he is distancing Hitler from the Christian community in ways that might make us feel comfy, but it is not entirely accurate.

For example, while it is true that Hitler had many pagan beliefs, it is also true that the Nazis exploited traditional Christian anti-Semitism, and drew support from Christian lay people, as well as Christian leaders in Germany.

Anti-Semitism, in other words, did not just come out of nowhere. It has a very long history, both within Catholicism and Protestantism.

Martin Luther, for example, wrote a tract titled, “On the Jews and Their Lies” in which he calls for the burning of synagogues in Germany. This tract was used as justification for Kristallnacht.

And the yellow star patched to the clothing of Jews originated with an edict of Pope Innocent III (in 1215).

Also, if Hitler teaches us anything, it is this: Be wary of charismatic leaders and authoritarian personalities who act as if they know everything, and have few doubts. And keep your critical thinking faculties engaged when you are together with others in rallies or mass movements.

These are cautions that can be applied to John Macarthur as well, whose following is frequently rather enthusiastic toward him and uncritical.

  3. santitafarella, Just a couple of quick points. 1) Most of us would be in complete disagreement on Luther’s stance on the Jews. In this, I believe he was very wrong. Were he alive today, he probably would not be held in such high esteem as he while speaking from the grave as it were! 2) You label many under the “Christian” label, but the road is very narrow and VERY few will find it. The popes of the Roman Catholic system are not true believers of the Lord Jesus Christ and would not classify as true Christians from a biblical perspective.

  4. Desert Pastor:

With all due respect, Christianity is a large and diverse phenomenon. To say that Catholicism is outside of “true” Christianity is ridiculous.

For many centuries, both Protestants and Catholics bore the grossest bigotry, and superstitious attitudes, towards Jews. To simply dismiss these people as being outside of “true” Christianity is indulgent on your part.

How can Christians take responsibility for the Christian history of anti-Semitism, and repent of it, if they do not acknowledge that it exists within their tradition?
