   Watched the video. He is somewhat better than most, in that he mentioned sin.

4. Doreen, That little snippet gives only a peek into the “worship service”. Lights, music, iconic art, story telling preaching, winsome to the point of needing insulin.

   Furthermore, as a Baptist church, there’s the departure from doctrine in ecclesiology – a CEO “senior pastor”, elders who do not meet the 1 Tim 3 requirements, multiple congregations with one set of “pastors”. It’s somewhere between Baptist and Presbyterian – in the land of the world’s model for businesses.

5. Wasn’t sure where to put this (whether here, or at “It’s all about the beat”), but figured it fit a little better here, since we’re talking about crowd manipulation.

   I picked up Rick Warren’s “The Purpose-Driven Church” at a thrift store for $2.99 (which is about $2.98 more than it’s worth), and found this nugget in the reading. Sounds like the fellow in the video has read this:

   “At Saddleback, we categorize songs according to target. Songs on the ‘crowd’ list are appropriate when unbelievers are present (at our seeker services). Songs on the ‘congregation’ list are songs that are meaningful to believers but wouldn’t make sense to the unchurched (we sing them at our midweek service). Songs on the ‘core’ list deal with service and ministry.

   Ask, “How does this tune make me feel?” Music exerts a great influence on human emotions. The wrong kind of music can kill the spirit and mood of a service…Decide what mood you want at your service, and use the style that creates it.”

   He goes on to say:

   I was encouraged to PDC by one of my former “pastors” after I confronted him about the influence Warren’s PDL was having in our church. He said PDC was “more tightly written”. I borrowed a copy (paid less than you!) and concluded that my former “pastor” was deceived and deceiving. That is a wretched book.

   Let’s use “The Shack” – it’s more current 🙂

7. You paid money for ‘purpose drivel?’ Someone bought me a copy and said, “This is what we are doing now!”

   Now? So what will we be doing next?

   Who can’t help but notice the nose dive of the churches?

   Who can’t help but be grieved at it?

   God is.

8. True story: PDC came out around the time I got saved, and I had heard a lot of people raving about the PDL. In fact, I almost bought PDC full-price at Wal-Mart–I even had it in my hand–but something (Someone?) kept nagging at me to put it down.

   I picked up my copy of PDC about a month ago, because now that I do know better, I can read it and point out to people the reasons to stay away from Purpose-Drivel™. Kinda like reading Mormon literature to be able to show people reasons for avoiding Mormonism.

11. No doubt many of you have seen the latest front page report of another testimony of a false convert. This man “choose Christianity” … “because the precepts of Jesus Christ spoke to me in terms of the kind of life that I would want to lead — being my brothers’ and sisters’ keeper, treating others as they would treat me,”. He went on to say, ““But what we can do, as flawed as we are, is still see God in other people and do our best to help them find their own grace.”
