Quotes (855)

John MacArthur The charismatic movement is largely the reason the church is in the mess it’s in today. In virtually every area where church life is unbiblical, you can attribute it to the charismatic movement. In virtually every area — bad theology, superficial worship, ego, prosperity gospel, personality elevation — all of that comes out of the charismatic movement.

  1. J-Mac is mostly right, but all the things he lists were around way before the charismatic movement in one form or another, and are attributable to man’s fallen sinfulness, not to a specific religious movement per se. Certainly the charismatic movement capitalizes upon, exploits, and epitomizes these errors – among others – yet it’s only to be expected that tickling ears teachers will cater to itching ears listeners, as it is written.

I’d also posit that his assertion that the “charismatic movement largely the reason the church is in the mess it’s in today” misses the mark somewhat, in that the actual reason (in my opinion) is a broadly unregenerate membership resulting from a false/partial gospel and a legalistic/therapeutic/moralistic works-righteousness sanctification/piety employed for spurious “church growth” and “self-help” reasons which serve to comfort, confirm, and harden rebellious sinners in their self-righteousness as opposed to confronting them with their lack of the fruit of the Spirit, their ongoing patterns of unrepentant sin, and disciplining them while gently calling them to examination in the light of Scripture.

    In Christ,

  2. I do not totally agree with Johnny Mac on this, I believe
there must be a balance and most charismatics are on one
extreme of the spectrum; but he (MacArthur) is at the other
    end. (cessationism, intellegent/mental assent)

  3. John Mac is absolutely correct 100%…That is IF you totally follow echo’s of echo’s of echo’s. In reality one camp chases after the signs and wonders dog and pony demon show, while the other neuters the Holy Spirit with pet scriptures and legalism as they quote dead people… Yet both are patently guilty of a broad road to destruction salvation/decision for Jesus gospel…sorry.
That being said, I do appreciate most of what MacArthur propounds….it’s just that “traditions of the elders” thing that hits me like beach sand on my hotdogs, if you know what i mean.

  4. Sounds like Mr. MacArthur has a personal ax to grind with the charismatic movement…which, is too bad. While, yes, unfortunately, a lot of craziness has come out of the movement, a lot of craziness can come out of any movement. I don’t think it’s a fair statement to attribute most of the problems in the church with the charismatic movement.

  5. @Berean Gal: I don’t think that the Charismatic movement is even within the orthodox ‘spectrum’ even though it claims to be. How can it be when the they have a false soteriology (salvation by repentance rather than faith and being born again apart from baptism of the holy spirit), a false Christology (kenosis), and embrace occultism (glossolalia, ‘slain in the spirit’, etc)? They are neo-montanists and therefore non-Christians.

  6. @Marie: I agree with John Mac. If you listen to his sermon series you will see he is correct. Virtually every ‘church’ institution has embraced neo-montanism (Charismaticism).
