A Mormon Mistake

Mormons believe that Jesus is Jehovah, (the LORD in most versions of the Old Testament). I would certainly agree with them on that. Since that is the case, it becomes very easy to refute most of what they believe about Jesus.

Those who adhere to the teachings of Mormonism believe Jesus hasn’t always existed. But Psalm 90:2, referring to Jehovah, says, “…even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” They say you should only pray to the Father, but throughout the Old Testament, people prayed to Jehovah (Genesis 25:21 says, “Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.”)

Latter-day Saints also believe at least three gods exist: The Father is a god called Elohim, the Holy Spirit is a god, and Jesus is a god. According to the Bible, however, before Jehovah there was no God formed, nor will there be after Him (Isaiah 43:10).

Clearly, whoever came up with the concept that the Father is Elohim and Jesus is Jehovah had zero knowledge of Hebrew. Elohim is the Hebrew word for God, and Jehovah is God’s name (Psalm 83:18). There are dozens of verses that claim Jehovah is Elohim. Deuteronomy 4:35 says, “Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the LORD [Jehovah] he is God [Elohim]; there is none else beside him.”

Furthermore, a belief in three separate gods makes mincemeat out of the first of the Ten Commandments. The first commandment (Exodus 20:3) says, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” Jehovah wrote that with His finger in stone. If that is Jesus speaking, as the second god, is it blasphemy for Him to say that we should have no gods before Him? What about the Father? If it’s the Father speaking, why is Jesus worshipped by the angels (Hebrews 1:6)? Aren’t the angels obligated to obey the Ten Commandments?

Mormons would like us to believe that the Bible is corrupted, and Joseph Smith was able to restore the truth. They have to believe the Bible is corrupted, because if it weren’t, the LDS church would cease to exist. Here’s a chicken or egg question for you: Did Mormonism come about because Joseph Smith thought the Bible was corrupt, or did he teach the Bible was corrupt because he came up with Mormonism?

While there are so many misconceptions about the Trinity, it is the concept that makes sense out of the entire Bible. All of the non-Trinitarian ideas-including those of the Mormons-fall apart when viewed through a Scriptural lens.

Becoming a God

If you’re looking for a religion that promotes the aspiration to become a god, you won’t have to look far.

This seemingly popular doctrine must appeal to a basic desire of sinful men. Satan played on this desire in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3) when he convinced Adam and Eve to doubt God, who had said the couple would die if they ate the fruit. Instead, Satan told them, they would be like God if they transgressed the only law God gave them.

Mormonism teaches that good Mormons will become gods. This is a doctrine that the Mormon missionaries won’t bring up on their first door-to-door visit, but, from my experience, they will defend it when confronted with it. Becoming gods is a clear teaching of the LDS church, contained in their Scripture:

Referring to those who are married eternally through Mormonism, and don’t commit murder,

“Then shall they be gods, because they have no end; therefore shall they be from everlasting to everlasting, because they continue; then shall they be above all, because all things are subject unto them. Then shall they be gods, because they have all power, and the angels are subject unto them.” (Doctrines and Covenants 132:20).

Catholicism also teaches that people can become gods—in very plain language.

“For the Son of God became man so that we might become God. The only-begotten Son of God, wanting to make us sharers in his divinity, assumed our nature, so that he, made man, might make men gods.” Catholic Catechism 460

While there are many schools of thought in Hinduism, new ageism, paganism, and Satanism, many who practice these religions also hope to become gods. Hindus can become gods through many cycles of reincarnation. The new age religion teaches that men will evolve into gods someday (in the age of Aquarius). Pagans worship nature and deities that control nature, and through learning more and more about esoteric truths, they believe they may attain godhood (also known as Gnosticism). Some Satanists believe that Satan is the true God of the universe, and will someday re-ascend to his previous place. When this happens, his loyal followers will be made gods as their reward.

Mormonism and Catholicism appear to me to be merely Christianized versions of new age, pagan and Satanic religions. They all use the prospect of becoming a god to appeal to the pride of fallen man.

The Bible teaches something much different: There is only one God (Isaiah 43:10, John 17:3). If that isn’t a big enough blow to the pride of sinful man, here’s an even bigger insult: Every human is commanded to die to him or herself, and live for the glory of the only true God. Anything else is idolatry.

I didn’t realize Mormons and Word of Faith Charismatics had so much in common.

Do you see any similarities between Mormonism and Charismatics in the following quote from LDS prophet Brigham Young? Aren’t these the same “symptoms” that Charismatics cite as proof of being baptized in the Holy Spirit (and thus, salvation)? Of course, to be fair, the Charismatics don’t believe a person’s blood literally changes when the Holy Spirit comes upon them, but I’m confident that most Mormons don’t believe that now either (darn those advances in science and human anatomy not foreseen by LDS prophets of old).

“Again, if a pure Gentile firmly believes the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and yields obedience to it, in such a case I will give you the words of the Prophet Joseph—’When the Lord pours out the Holy Ghost upon that individual he will have spasms, and you would think that he was going into fits.’ Joseph said that the Gentile blood was actually cleansed out of their veins, and the blood of Jacob made to circulate in them; and the revolution and change in the system were so great that it caused the beholder to think they were going into fits. If any of the Gentiles will believe, we will lay our hands upon them that they may receive the Holy Ghost, and the Lord will make them of the house of Israel. Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Volume 2, Page 269, 1855

Good thing Brigham Young was just giving his opinion and not speaking as a prophet when he quoted Joseph Smith who must have been giving his opinion and not acting as a prophet when he said this!

“Don’t bother reading your Bible”

Over the last few years, I’ve noticed a pattern among many false religions and false teachers of the Word.

Catholicism–Don’t bother reading your Bible. You can’t understand it. Let the Magisterium tell you what it means.

Mormonism–Don’t bother reading your Bible. You can’t trust it, it’s been corrupted. Just let the General Authorities tell you what it means.

Jehovah’s Witnesses–Don’t bother reading your Bible. You can’t interpret it. Just let the Watchtower tell you what it means.

Postmodernism–Don’t bother reading your Bible. Nobody can understand. No one knows what it means.

Warrenism–Don’t bother reading your Bible. Unless it’s “The Message” because that’s the only one anybody can understand. Just read your “Purpose Driven Life” and let Rick Warren tell you your purose.

Prosperity “Gospel”–Don’t bother reading your Bible. Satan won’t let you understand it. Just blindly swallow the verses we cherry-pick and take out of context.

Lying Signs and Satanic Wonders Movement–Don’t bother reading your Bible. Only Pharisees try to undertsand it. Just trust the dog-and-pony-show, I mean sleight-of-hand, I mean signs and wonders we perform on stage every night.

On the other hand, the Bible tells us that even the words of the Old Testament alone are enough to lead us into truth. “from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus” (2nd Timothy 3:15). And we have the Holy Spirit, of whom Jesus said, “He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). So we don’t need a Magistreium, or General Authorities, or a Watchtower, or lying signs and Satanic wonders to lead us into truth. By the leading of the Holy Spirit in opening His Scripture to us, He will lead us into the truth.

Download your free cult flyer here.

It was the spring of 2006 and I kept seeing Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses going door to door throughout the neighborhoods of my community. It got me thinking: What are the local Christian Churches doing to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to combat the spread of false doctrine in our community? Additionally I pondered about what I could personally do.

I then came across the Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry website (www.CARM.org). They had a downloadable cult warning flyer. Eureka! This was exactly what I didn’t know I was looking for and exactly what we needed here in my town. I quickly went to work on my own version of a flyer and several months later, the new flyer was birthed.

Now, in the spring of 2008, I have updated and produced the second version of the cult flyer and am now offering it for you to download for free to distribute in your neighborhood.

Flyer: Who’s Really Knocking at Your Door?

For those who prefer a more professional look, a brother in the Lord from Australia produced a professional version of the flyer for me to make available to all of you. You can download it here.

I also encourage you to download my free tracts to insert in each of the flyers. There are three different tracts (front and back) on one sheet of paper.
Simply print the cult flyer on 11 x 14 paper (front and back). Then print the tract (also front and back on 11 x 14 paper). Cut the tract into three, fold the cult flyer and insert one tract into each flyer. Then put a hole in the top with a hole punch, put a rubber band through it and it’s ready to be hung on doors.
I am currently working on six new tracts to download and insert in the cult flyer and will make them available in the near future.

What did it take?

What did it take for God to save us? To put it into human terms, I would say this:

Suppose I broke into your house, tied you up, and made you watch as I beat your son, killed your wife, and stole everything you owned. You call the police, they come and arrest me, and I am sentenced to die. In the meantime, I am free on bail. So, to stay your wrath, which is firmly upon me, I mow your grass, do your laundry, paint your house and take out the garbage. However, none of these “good deeds” make up for the fact that I have committed such vile offenses against you. There is nothing I can do to cover over my atrocities, and hide them from your sight. Your wrath abides upon me still.

As the day of my execution approaches, you remember your mercy. For no reason other than the fact that you have so desired in your heart, you make me an offer. In order to spare me from death, you will allow your only son to be strapped to that table, have the needles inserted in his arms, and take the penalty that I deserved. Not only that, but you will then adopt me into your family as your son. I plead with you, saying, “No! No! No! I don’t like that idea! I have a better idea! Let me do good things for you! Let me earn my pardon! Let me do enough good things that I don’t have to accept THAT offer!” You look at me and say, “Either my son dies for your crimes–or you pay for them yourself forever. Which is it?”

This is the dilemma facing every single human being who will ever walk the face of the earth. They have all committed horrific acts against the LORD of all the earth. They have walked through His creation, stolen from Him, blasphemed His name–and have rightly earned His wrath.

Everyone.

EVERY.

ONE.

The only way to avoid the eternal punishment we deserve is to accept His offer of His Son, the blood that He shed, to hide our sins from the sight of the Father. Oh, but how many? How many do not bow their knee and confess salvation is through Christ alone! They rather say, “No, God! I have a better idea! I’ll do good things for You! I’ll do such good things that You won’t have any choice but to pardon me!” And they think they are bringing Him gifts of gold, silver, and precious stones. When in fact they are bringing Him a big, stinking pile of used Kotex. Have these people not read the words of the prophet Isaiah? “All our righteousnesses are as filthy rags.”

Used tampons.

Sorry to be so blunt, but I feel the translators were much too kind. All of our righteousnesses are as filthy as the cloths a woman has used during her period of uncleanness. They are drenched with the stain and odor of our own uncleanness. And they are good for nothing but to be thrown into a pile and burned. And yet how many people will approach the throne of God, holding them in their hands as their most prized possession, thinking that the Lord will be pleased with such an offering. And He will say, “Get out of My sight! I can’t stand to look at you and all that waste you have brought Me! Who do you think I am that I can be bartered with such filth? Do you think I would be pleased with all your uncleanness? In fact, who are you? I don’t even know you! I never have! So be gone! Be gone! NEVER approach Me EVER AGAIN! You dirty, filthy, vile miscreant! Be burned with everlasting fire, that I never have to be reminded of you ever again!!”

Friend, if you are reading this, and you have been gathering up used menstrual cloths as an offering to God to bribe Him into letting you into His kingdom–I beg you to stop right this minute. Because what you are telling God is this–that the blood in those bloody cloths you are offering Him is better than the blood that was shed by His dear and precious Son. You cannot assuage the wrath of God with your own filthy garments. Do you think that God is under some kind of obligation to overlook your sins because you have earned enough “attaboys” and have done enough “good deeds?” How much is enough? Who decides? You? Are you the final arbiter of how much good is enough? Don’t even think for a moment that you have the keys of the kingdom of God–those are in the Hands of the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the one who opens the door to the kingdom, for He is the Door. He opens it, and no one can shut it. But, friend, He also shuts it, and no one can open it.

You have sinned against Almighty God. The only offer there is for your pardon is to accept the sacrifice of His Son on the Cross, and to be adopted into His family as His son. No amount of mowing, laundry, painting, or any other little trinket of a deed you can offer Him will ever take away the fact that you are a sinner. Only the blood of Jesus. That’s what it took.

Ravi’s Descent.

Ingrid first reported on Slice of Laodicea on April 23rd about Ravi Zacharias’ refusal to pray in Jesus’ name at the National Day of Prayer (and even Coram Deo tackled the issue here on his blog).

But Ravi’s descent started a long time ago in 2004 when he was a guest speaker at the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah. There, Ravi gave a sermon that left the Mormons feeling good; like there was no difference between their counterfeit “Jesus” and the true Jesus revealed by the Scriptures. I first reported on this here.

I hope people will begin to step back from blindly endorsing such men as this. Examine them closely before you sit under their teaching. I, for one, am not willing to endorse or listen to any man who is willing to compromise with a cult; I refuse to listen to anything Ravi has to say, and I just wish more Christians would be as careful and discerning.

The only three people that most Mormons will not debate their theology with.

Mormons have invited us to examine, question, and challenge not only the Book of Mormon but their entire religion (as seen in this post). Well, I’ve found three exceptions to this open invitation. I’ve provided a list of the three people that–if they question Mormonism–most Mormons will just dismiss them with prejudice and will not seriously listen to anything they have to say.

1). Other Mormons

2). Ex-Mormons

3). Non-Mormons

Additionally (and for clarification) I’ve included below the reasons they dismiss any and all critics who fall into one of these three categories without ever considering the validity of their challenges.

1). OTHER MORMONS (those who are currently members of LDS):

This is because the LDS organization does not welcome free-thought because they are told to “never speculate about Church Doctrine” (Gospel Principles, Page 2).

And according to Ward Teachers Message, Deseret News, Church Section, Page 5, May 26, 1945, “When our leaders speak, the thinking has been done. Who within LDS would dare risk anyone else knowing that they’re struggling with questions about LDS doctrine? This instruction in the Deseret News continues: “When [our leaders] propose a plan–it is God’s plan. When they point the way, there is no other which is safe. When they give direction, it should mark the end of controversy. God works in no other way. To think otherwise, without immediate repentance, may cost one his faith, may destroy his testimony, and leave him a stranger to the kingdom of God.” This certainly doesn’t leave room for anything but blind obedience, even if evidence to the contrary is overwhelming. This indoctrination continues with a quote from Joseph Smith, “That man who rises up to condemn others, finding fault with the Church . . . is in the high road to apostasy; and if he does not repent, will apostatize, as God lives.” So it is plain to see, if any Mormon is bold enough to question LDS doctrine, anything he says should be dismissed immediately because he is questioning the leaders and he is considered to be in apostasy.

2). EX-MORMONS (those who used to be Mormons but have since left the organization):

This is because Latter-day Saints are indoctrinated to believe that no ex-Mormon could possibly have left the organization because they discovered the truth. Instead they–all of them, every single one, without exception–must be disgruntled with the LDS organization and are therefore spreading nothing but lies.

3). NON-MORMONS (those who have never been Mormons):

This is because, they argue, no non-Mormon could possibly understand their history and faith as well as they do, thus whatever they say cannot possibly be true.

There you have it: If you’re not a current Mormon, an ex-Mormon, or a non-Mormon, then you are free to discuss with them the plethora of problems, contradictions, inconsistencies, falsehoods, fallacies, mistakes, false prophecies, and insurmountable errors of Mormonism and they will surely listen with an open mind. So next time a Mormon sticks his fingers in his ears and says, “What you’re saying can’t possibly be true because you’re a fellow-Mormon, an ex-Mormon, or a non-Mormon,” now you know why.

There really are only two religions

The religion of God, and the religion of Satan. There may be 80,000 religions other than Christianity. But really, they are ONE religion–the religion of man’s ability to save himself (or, really, his lack of ability).

Found the following video over at Symphony of Scripture. John MacArthur explains it much better than I ever could (so what else is new?)

Mormon elder receives the Drama Llama award.

There are generally three types of reaction you can expect to see when the Holy Spirit convicts someone of their sin:

1). Repentance: They feel the conviction and weight of their own sin and realize that they need Jesus Christ as the propitiation for those sins.

2). Suppression: They feel the conviction of their sin but just laugh it off and suppress God’s beckoning call (and their heart grows harder). They apply the “ignore it and it will go away” philosophy. They comprehend their dire condition but choose to ignore the truth, putting it off for one more day.

3). Anger: They feel the conviction of their sin but lash out with anger because their pride in self, tradition, church, organization etc., simply won’t allow them to repent.

Two minutes into the below video you’ll see a Mormon elder who can’t take the conviction of sin any longer and becomes very angry (yes, I know that most Mormons don’t act in this manner so you don’t have to e-mail me to tell me).

There’s definitiely a conviction of sin going on in this young man’s heart. Perhaps he’s been living with the gnawing feeling that a lifetime of dead works, commitment, and dedication to a defunct faith that cannot give man any assurance of salvation has come to a head. Or perhaps he was just having a bad day. Either way, he’s beside himself and another Mormon elder even tries to calm him down with no luck.

As you watch this video, remember back to all those times Mormons have come onto this blog and called me “angry” and accused me of “attacking” them because I dared to print the teachings and quotes of their own organization. Consider all the times I’ve been called “hateful” in spite of the fact that it’s the Mormon’s who founded their whole religion on the idea that the Christian faith is apostate, that Christians are heathens, and that the Christian God is the Mormon Devil. Remember all that when you watch this young man’s behavior toward Christians who are merely preaching the Gospel.

Thanks to Rhea for directing me to this video.

Read the news articles here and here and watch an eye-opening video on polygamy here.

Before anyone criticizes these people who practiced this lifestyle of polygamy (especially when the criticism comes from mainstream Mormons) just keep in mind that the blame for this polygamist behavior is not to be laid at the feet of Warren Jeffs, but the blame is none other than the cult’s original founder, Joseph Smith. It was Smith and his insatiable sexual appetite that led him to claim that God gave him the “new and everlasting covenant” of polygamy:

“For behold, I reveal unto you a new and everlasting covenant; and if ye abide not that covenant, then are ye damned; for no one can reject this covenant and be permitted to enter into my glory. For all who will have a blessing at my hands shall abide the law which was appointed . . . before the foundation of the world. And as pertaining to the new and everlasting covenant, it was instituted for the fulness [sic] of my glory; and he that receiveth a fulness [sic] thereof must and shall be damned, saith the Lord God.” (Doctrine & Covenants, 132:4-6)

This “new and everlasting covenant” of polygamy was confirmed by Mormonism’s second president/prophet Brigham Young when he said in the Deseret News on November 14, 1855:

Now if any of you will deny the plurality of wives and continue to do so, I promise that you will be damned . . .

Sixth president/prophet of Mormonism Joseph F. Smith said in the Journal of Discourses, Volume 20, page 31:

“I understand the law of celestial marriage to mean that every man in this Church, who has the ability to obey and practice it in righteousness and will not, shall be damned, I say I understand it to mean this and nothing less, and I testify in the name of Jesus that it does mean that.”

Well, last time I checked, an “everlasting covenant” meant exactly that: an everlasting covenant.

Even LDS published Gospel Principles tells us on page 98 (1997 edition):

The fulness [sic] of the gospel is called the new and everlasting covenant. . . . The Lord calls it ‘everlasting’ because it is ordained by an everlasting God and because the covenant will never be changed.

So before you mainstream Mormons judge and condemn these FLDS members, remember, they’re not the ones who apostatized.

3,913 documented changes to the “most correct” book on earth.

Joseph Smith called it the most correct of any book on earth. He said it was the keystone of the Mormon religion, that it contains the fullness of the everlasting gospel and a man would get nearer to God by abiding its precepts than by any other book. Yet, the Book of Mormon has undergone 3,913 documented changes, alterations, and corrections since its first printing.

These changes to the most correct book on earth can be reviewed in the book 3,913 Changes in the Book of Mormon published by Utah Lighthouse Ministries. This book reproduces (via photocopy) the 1830 Book of Mormon page-by-page along with the modern version showing all the changes. This is a must-have for those serious about studying Mormonism.

The Book of Mormon can and should be tested. It invites criticism. Hugh Nibley, An Approach to the Book of Mormon, Page 13

This book [Book of Mormon] must be either true or false. . . . If false, it is one of the most cunning, wicked, bold, deep-laid impositions ever palmed upon the world, calculated to deceive and ruin millions who will sincerely receive it as the word of God. Will the Mormon church be able to stop NASA’s planned assault on the inhabitants of the moon?

Mormon MoonAccording to this article NASA is set to slam not one, but two satellites into the moon. Since Mormon leaders have taught that the moon is populated (along with the sun), I anticipate that the LDS church will vehemently protest this planned attack on the moon. I expect to see the LDS church publicly confront NASA on their disregard for human life and their insensitivity to the inhabitants of the moon. The LDS church will have to race against the clock, though, as this attack on the moon people is scheduled for February 2009.

If they don’t take a stand here and now, Kolob may be next!

What if Gordon B. Hinckley returned from the grave to deliver one last message?

hinckley.jpg Here’s your chance to be a little creative and use some artistic license. I pose this query to all my readers, so put on your thinking caps.

It was exactly one month ago today that Mormon prophet/president Gordon B. Hinckley died. What if he was permitted to return from where he’s spent the last month (wherever you think he may be) to deliver one last, but brief, message? What do you think his message to the world would be now?

I anxiously await your comments.
