Saying It Like It Is?

Here’s a church sign put up by a congregation in Blacklick, Ohio in response to the hit single I Kissed A Girl (And Liked It) by Katy Perry (WARNING: site opens in a new window and plays songs from her album automatically).

ABC reports:

KATY PERRY’S SONG USED AS CHURCH WARNING TO TEENS

BLACKLICK, Ohio (AP) — A church near Columbus, Ohio, is using Katy Perry as a bad example. A sign outside Havens Corners Church in Blacklick has the lyrics from her song, “I kissed a girl and I liked it” — but it adds, “Then I went to hell.” Church pastor Reverend Dave Allison says the Bible is clear that homosexuality is a sin, so the sign is intended as a loving warning to teens. He says it’s confused some people who either don’t know the song or don’t understand the message. Lynne Bowman of the gay rights group Equality Ohio says the sign indicates the church isn’t very accepting. Perry has not responded to calls for comment.

Obviously, those who come across the sign would have to have some inkling of the song and what its lyrics glorify to understand why kissing a girl would send someone to hell. It’s no wonder, too, that the world, and I presume, (perhaps) a section of Christians who are liberal in their outlook, is up in arms over this “offensive” message.

What do you think? Good or bad call on the part of the pastor? Is this a case of “tell it like it is” or can the message about homosexuality as a sin be better put forward?

Bible Reference Notes: “Children of God and Children of the Devil.”

The Bible Reference Notes for today will hopefully clear up a common misconception.

In relation to the human race, we often hear people say, “We’re all God’s children.” This, however, is not supported by Scripture. In fact, Scripture clearly lays out just who are and who are not the children of God.

Children of God and Children of the Devil

Children of God

John 1:12 Those who receive Jesus

Romans 8:14, 16 Those led by the Spirit of God

Romans 9:8 Children of the promise, not children of the flesh

2 Corinthians 6:14-18 Believers, not unbelievers

1 John 2:29-3:2 Believers

1 John 3:9-10 Those who practice righteousness

Children of the Devil

Matthew 13:37-39 The tares are the sons of the evil one

John 8:38, 41-45 Those who reject Christ and His words

1 John 3:8, 10 Those who practice sin/do not practice righteousness

A new way to describe false converts?

As I was driving along I-40 here yesterday, I saw something that started a chain of free-association in my head, and landed me on this thought: should we begin calling false converts “cowboy Christians?” Allow me to explain:

You see these guys all the time. They look the part. They act the part. They dress the part. They use all the right words and phrases. They walk around wearing the Wrangler™ Jeans, western shirts, a belt buckle that doubles as a full-length mirror, Justin™ Boots, cowboy hat. They’ve always got a wad of chew in their cheek, they go line-dancing every weekend, they go watch the rodeo every time it comes to town, and they drive a big, huge, full-size pickup truck, with dual rear wheels–and a sticker in the back window that says something like “Cowboy Up!”

By all of their outward appearances, you would swear they are a cowboy. There are truly real cowboys out there–but this guy ain’t one of them.

But they’re not.

What does this have to do with the church? This:

You see these guys all the time. They look the part. They act the part. They dress the part. They use all the right words and phrases. They walk around wearing the kahki dress pants, polo shirts, and they carry the biggest study Bible they can find. They’ve always got a smile on their face, they go to a building every Sunday and hear a speech, they have a couple CD’s from a singer that used the word “God” or “Christ” in one of their songs once, and they drive a big, huge, full-size pickup truck, with dual rear wheels–and a fish sticker on their back bumper.

By all of their outward appearances, you would swear they are a Christian. There are truly real Christians out there–but this guy ain’t one of them.

But they’re not. They think they’re saved because

  • they go to church (check)
  • their parents went to church (check)
  • their kids go to church (check)
  • they have had their children dedicated (check)
  • they have had their children baptized (check)
  • they send their monthly donation to the church (check)
  • they volunteer at the homeless shelter (check)
  • “OK, we’ve got the checklist finished! Now we can just sit back and wait for that sweet by-and-by, ’cause we’ve got our ducks in a row, and we’ve got our ticket stamped!”

What they do not know–perhaps because their pastor has never told them–is that salvation is not about looking the part. It’s not about whether you wear a shirt-and-tie, or an old pair of jeans, when you walk in Sunday morning. It’s not about a list of “Things To Do” that we need to perform in order to get enough gold stars and smiley faces on God’s Heavenly Chart.

Salvation is about seeing ourselves for being the dispicable creatures we are, and knowing that Christ Jesus–the Son of the Living God–came to earth, wrapped Himself in this disgusting stuff we call flesh, took our wounds, our stripes, our death, and made them His own, so that we could be the righteousness of God in Him. It is about seeing that all of our good deeds, and all of our “church” and all those little trinkets we call “good deeds” are nothing more than rags that are covered with the filth of human effort, and the stench of self-righteousness.

A person can look the part, they can dress the part, they can talk the part. But unless that person sees that there is absolutely no way for them to reconcile themselves to God apart from repenting from their sins and confessing Christ Jesus as their Savior AND Lord, they are a “Cowboy Christian.” They look like one–but they ain’t.

Isaiah 53:3-6He is despised and rejected by men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

Isaiah 64:5-7You meet him who rejoices and does righteousness, who remembers You in Your ways. You are indeed angry, for we have sinned—in these ways we continue; and we need to be saved. But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; we all fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. And there is no one who calls on Your name, who stirs himself up to take hold of You; for You have hidden Your face from us, and have consumed us because of our iniquities.

2nd Corinthians 5:21For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Philippians 1:9-11And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Not dying for the sins of her father.

There’s a beautiful story coming out of England that will melt your heart. A story of love, sacrifice, forgiveness, and doing what’s right when almost everyone around you is telling you to do what is wicked.

In this article from the Daily Mail, a 19 year old tells of her rape that occurred when she was 16. That rape left her pregnant, and against all the counsel she received (including her dad’s), and against all worldly “logic,” she chose to have the baby.

This is a fantastic article and a great story of inspiration . . . one that Planned Parenthood wouldn’t be too happy about.

God will never bless a nation that does this.

It’s amazing what you’ll find in a dumpster in America . . . and we still have the audacity to ask God to bless America. You might as well take all those “God Bless America” bumper stickers off your cars because God will never continue to bless a nation that does what we do.

On Slice of Laodicea, Ingrid quoted Dr. Monica Miller in her article on what was found in their local abortion clinic dumpster. Here are two excerpts from Dr. Miller’s comments as quoted on Slice:

    Quote One:
Our April 5th search of the Woman’s Advisory dumpster was the first time we found the remains of aborted babies from that clinic. As we separated out the blood-soaked blue-colored surgical papers, my student, John Brick, was the first to see the foot, about three quarters of an inch in length. We also found other body parts from other aborted babies, eyes, rib cages, spinal columns, eyes out of their sockets — the remains of human beings mixed in with blood saturated trash. We found fetal tissue sticking to a blood-stained McDonald’s hamburger bag.
    Quote Two:
When we unwrapped the bloody surgical papers and saw the remains of the babies we delved into a secret world. When I looked at the dismembered bodies I saw human beings who died a violent death. What does the abortionist see? It is a mystery, how I can see one thing and he another. These unwanted aborted unborn were consigned to the trash in the darkness of a dumpster — never to be seen, never to be known. When we took them out of the trash we discovered their secret — the secret of their hidden lives — their hidden deaths. We also saw first-hand the most unseemly — most sordid side of the abortion practice.

“There are only 2 basic kinds of sex: sex with victims and sex without. Sex with victims is always wrong. Sex without is ALWAYS right.”

“The question of whether or not to sell ourselves to men is a false one: The real question is how to sell ourselves in the way that is least destructive to ourselves and our sisters. Prostitutes don’t need our condescension. What they need is our alliance. And we need theirs.”

“At Planned Parenthood you can also get birth control without the consent or knowledge of your parents. So, if you are 14, 15 or 16 and you come to Planned Parenthood, we won’t tell your parents you’ve been there. We swear we won’t tell your parents.”

What is so hard about this question?

A pro-abortion supporter takes a video camera to a pro-life protest and asks the pro-lifers a simple question. Astonishingly none of them were able to answer it (not sure if others did answer satisfactorily but were simply edited out). I was shocked that these pro-lifers stuttered, stumbled, and fumbled over this question.

My answer would have been quite simple: “The same thing that happened to Susan Smith and Andrea Yates and the same thing if you were to murder my child.

If you want to know what the question was, you’ll have to watch the video.

    Why don’t they get it?

Have you ever been perplexed by those who can’t seem to grasp simple axioms? Do you long for the days when people exercised reason and logic? Do you rack your brain trying to figure out how someone can fail to see something that’s so obvious?

Well, I discovered some great insight from the Scriptures on why this happens and I’ve succinctly written it below for your edification. I hope that it helps you when you are banging your head on the wall because the person you’re talking to seems completely incapable of accepting even elementary truths. When you find yourself at this point I encourage you to refer to the following:

One’s heart and mind has to first be opened by God to even be able to understand the Scriptures (Luke 24:25, Acts 16:14, 1 John 5:20) because the carnal man cannot accept the things of God (1 Corinthians 2:14) and even as he’s perishing he considers the preaching of the cross to be foolishness (1 Corinthians 1:18).

It is God and God alone who grants the repentance necessary that leads to the knowledge of the truth (2 Timothy 2:25). No one gets to the Father except through the Son (John 14:6) but no one can come to the Son unless the Father draws them (John 6:44) and grants it (John 6:65).

The Son also draws men unto Himself (John 12:32) and we don’t control who is drawn because all that the Father gives to Christ will come (John 6:37, 6:39, 17:2, 17:24).

When we keep these essential truths present in our mind we will be less likely to try to argue, debate, or manipulate someone into Heaven.

For your convenience I’ve incorporated the above into the printable Bible Reference Notes found here.

    What’s Up, Ray Comfort?

    Ray Comfort

    Ray Comfort

Ken Silva at Apprising Ministries and Ingrid Schlueter at Slice of Laodicea disagree with Ray’s practice of participating in some conferences where he will be standing shoulder-to-shoulder with health and wealth heretics on the same stage. The more surprising thing is that this is not the first time that Ray has done this.

Having observed Ray’s ministry, I can say without much doubt that I know that he will strive to preach the Gospel as it is without hesitation. However, the issue here is not whether he will preach the Gospel, but whether Ray, whose radio show has on many occasions decried the practices of such heretics and their errant doctrines, should be seen to be in league with these heretics by his participation in such conferences.

I’m of two minds on this issue, not because I respect Ray and therefore am hesitant to point out that he’s wrong if it were indeed so, but because I think there are questions to be answered:

    1. Should Ray be seen to be associated with such WoF heretics though we have faith in his motivation to preach the Gospel at such conferences?
    2. Will such an approach, i.e. preaching the true Gospel in a heretical conference, be effective?
    3. Or is this a case where we can bring up the fact that though Jesus dined with sinners, he didn’t partake of their sinful ways but spoke His truth to them?

Thankfully, Ray has decided to respond openly to Ingrid here.

Having now read both sides of the story, I’d like to ask what your take on this is.
